What is the Trinity? Is written by RC Sproul and gives historical and philosophical context as to the relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Sproul starts the book with a look into what monotheism is and how religion has evolved. He explains all religions evolved from animism to polytheism, henotheism, and then monotheism. There has been much debate since then as to whether the bible is monotheistic and what the origins of monotheism were. Other than where, when, and with whom monotheism started, he gets into the Trinity. If there is in fact one god then how can he be three? The Old Testament firmly establishes that there is one God; meanwhile the New Testament declares that God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is divine. This brings Sproul into how we have over time tried to figure this out. …show more content…
Meanwhile, in the Christian faith, diversity finds its unity in God Himself. In God we find one being in three persons and the ground for unity and diversity. He points out that there are hints of the Trinity in the Old Testament and that monotheism is assumed in the New Testament. He is able to provide good support for these points with biblical verses and deeper explanations of them. That is not to say that this can now be clearly accepted as matter of fact, which is proven so by the controversies over the years within the Church. He goes on to cover how sometimes the best way of learning something to be true, is by learning what is false. Sproul finishes up with explaining the Trinity as One in Essence, Three in Person. He does a good job of explaining that distinguishing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as a person is problematic. God is better understood then as an essence, existence, or subsistence. Dr. Sproul is able to write with good clarity and details into answering the question of “What is the
...nity. The Holy Spirit allows human beings to become closer to God, and the relationship between the Father and the Son. After writing about both the Trinity and Salvation, I have learned that they are immensely interconnected. The Trinity allows human beings to find Salvation. All in all, the Trinity is not three separate parts, but one part with three different essences.
Gunton's emphasis on Christ and creation comes from his critique on Barth's theology which, according to Gunton, gives more importance to redemption than creation, and is inadequate on the discussion of Christ's mediating work. Gunton opines that tradition removed Jesus Christ in their doctrine of creation, so there is a need to restore the doctrine of creation with Christology. In his doctrine of creation, therefore, Gunton stresses Christ's mediating role in creation.
The ministries of Jesus and the Holy Spirit are closely related, each one serving an individual purpose while complimenting the other. Although the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all one in the trinity, they each have different roles that they play. The Holy Spirit plays an active part in our lives, as does Jesus. The role of the Spirit changed with Jesus. When Jesus died and rose from the cross, He opened up a new doorway for us, a new opportunity for us to experience the Holy Spirit. The Spirit became active and real to us in a way that He never could before. Today, our lives are focused on Jesus, focused on His love and sacrifice. His present ministry is seen through His believers. We are His lights in this present dark world.
"The elements of the Person of Christ are to be established; the faith which accompanies the theoretic process always presupposes their unity; this is for faith immediately certain, though not as yet narrowly defined, not as yet mediately cognised through the knowledge of the distinct elements, which
Ronald Nash is the author of Is Jesus the Only Savior?. In Chapters 1-6, he examines the issues of pluralism and exclusivism in a comprehensive fashion. Even in the preface, there is found important information: He addresses important terms needed when one is discussing the divinity of Jesus Christ and ensures that the reader understands just what the terms “pluralism” and “exclusivism” mean. He also examines various beliefs concerning Christ and His claims of divinity. As this book is intended to address these beliefs, Nash appropriately establishes from the very beginning what the basic forms of these beliefs are.
Bible does not have the word Trinity and it does not provide a clear definintion of it. However, the Trinity is one of the most important and key beliefs in our faith. Now, the question we have to ask is, “Is the doctrine of the Trinity really biblical?” Even though we can never fully comprehend the Trinity, scripture help us to understand better. Knowing the doctrine of the Trinity and its biblical basis in the old and new testaments is very important. Biblical evidence supports the Trinity and teaches us that there is one God who exists eternally in three People. The Bible does provide us, with all the component parts of the doctrine. We are made to confess the Trinity as a truly biblical doctrine.
Edward Spencer celebrated allegorical writing with his classic romantic epic "The Faerie Queen." Even as Milton criticized the use of allegory, he indubitably implemented the use of it in "Paradise Lost." Although Milton does use allegory, his use of the form tremendously differs from that of Spencer. His application of allegory is a reversal of the typical Spenserian allegory.
“Trinity” is a word that symbolizes the incarnation of a three-in-one Godhead. She represents the “Holy Spirit” because many people are brought to the “One” which is said to be Neo by her. In the film we have Morpheus which in biblical references is "the Father," Neo who is "the Son," and Trinity who is "the Holy Spirit." In of the scenes Trinity talked to Neo when he died in the Matrix. Her kiss raised him, which would reference the biblical verse Romans 8:11 “…. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you…” Trinity in one particular scene in the film she insisted that Neo needed her assistance in order to help Morpheus, Trinity symbolizes our lives that we need to walk in the Spirit. We might know what needs to be done in life, but we can't accomplish it on our own value or strength. We need the “Holy Spirit” to be our
To start the book, the author, Hall, discusses the main church subjects he is going to talk about. He mainly talks about the key focuses of the Church Fathers. This includes the question of the incarnation, the Trinity, and the question of humanity and the church. He relates and outlines these by relating them to the issues that arose with in the early church and how they came to solve them.
In John 10:30 Jesus says; “I and the Father are One.” By this, He meant that He and God were the same. For example, God and the Son of God both created everything (1 Corinthians 8:6) (Morgan, 211–212). The Holy Spirit is also God too, as one can read in 1 John 5:7–8: “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” This Holy Divinity is called the Trinity- a group of three, as One. “In the name of the Trinity the living God is revealed” (Robinson, 187) This Trinity is God, the Father, God, the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit. “The Triune God is an all-sufficient God, all-sufficient for Himself and all-sufficient for His people” (Robinson,
The Trinity doctrine cannot be proven by simply reading the scriptures; it has to be described and explained in detail, before you can begin to see the Trinitarian view. The Trinity doctrine is a doctrine of inference, not a doctrine of fact. If you ever listen or take part in a Oneness verses Trinity debate you will find that as long as they are quoting scriptures the Trinity looses ground. Hence, the doctrine of the Trinity must be “injected” into the scriptures to prove itself. One man once said “The Trinity has to be piped into Scripture before it can be piped out.”
The doctrine of the Trinity, as seen in the Christian bible, is primary to the Christian faith. The word “Trinity” does not actually appear in the bible; it is a theological label meant to summarize certain teachings of certain passages of scripture, and is crucial to properly understand what God is like, how He relates to us, and how we relate to Him. It may also raise many difficult questions including what does it mean that God is a Trinity? While it is difficult for us to fully understand everything about the trinity, it is quite possible to answer questions like this one and come to a solid grasp of what it means for God to be three in one.
Trinitarian theology within the book of Revelation is not at first sight easily recognisable amongst the plethora of images and prophecies that are recorded. The beauty of John’s theology is that the Trinity is deeply embedded in the text so that the reader must dissect the book in order to glimpse the theological beauty that is present. This essay will seek to explore the threads of the Holy Trinity that appear in the book of Revelation by looking at the characteristics of God, the specific Christology of John and the role of the Holy Spirit in the book of Revelation. In looking at each of these three areas as distinct yet overlapping threads I hope to give a succinct and scholastic Trinitarian theology of Revelation.
In the Bible there is no passage of Scripture that demonstrates and explains the full doctrine of the Trinity and thus it has been the intention of theologians and the early church doctrines to try to render an understanding to the enigma of ‘One God’ (Fortman, 1972).The slow evolution of the doctrine of the Trinity from its beginning is a result of the constraints of linguistic and theoretical theology (Hunt, 2004).
The Trinity is made up of God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This concept is what many Catholics believe in, but other worldwide religions believe in other beliefs. Out of all the three Divine Persons, “Jesus is the most qualified to bring the renewal of creation because it was through him that creation came into being” (Pohle February 7th). We as humans will have to face the consequences for actions that we have done in the past, present and future. Jesus has come into the world as a human to show his dignity and save us from sin; he was the world and of all creation. As we come to read more about Jesus we get to know Jesus more, we learn about what he did, how he did it and why he had to do these saving actions.
