Kino refuses to give up this pearl even though the pearl is worth nothing compared to his son, his house, and boat just because of how much it promised to his family’s future. In the book Kino even states that he would lose his soul if he were to give away the pearl. The pearl was evil and Juana noticed this so early in the novel and tries several times to get Kino to throw the pearl into the sea. She knew the pearl would make the greed of men want to destroy everything that Kino ever loved because he owned the pearl that everyone wanted. The pearl itself was never evil the book shows that it was the greed and lust of men that destroyed almost everything that Kino had before he threw it away. At the end of the book it shows the tone change
