Religion in the general aspect is best described as a cultural system of beliefs and practices that people look to spiritually in order explain and understand the nature of human existence. For many people religion holds great value to the meaning of life. Religion provides people with moral guidelines, beliefs, and practices of worship in order to help them through their daily life. Individuals vary on their level of commitment or devotion to their religious faith, however the basic meaning and purpose of having religion in a person’s life remains true to all who choose to believe in a higher power. Young also recognizes the similarities between the Eastern and Western religions when he states they, “Both see human life, as it is ordinarily lives, as out of touch with what is ultimately true and good. Both prescribe a way back to the true and the good” (Young, 182). These religious regions also differ greatly as they have individualized ideas and values based on a variety of different philosophies, geographical ideas and beliefs of higher power. In recognizing this, I believe that Christians could learn from Hinduism by allowing more flexibility and incorporating the premise of finding oneself in the process of also striving for a close relationship with God. This is important because I believe it is very beneficial for a person to live their life for their own sense of achievement in terms of religion rather than one that is only specifically based off of a divine being such as God in the Western religions. Hinduism could also implement aspects of Christianity such as more structure to the religion to help guide the religions faithful followers and more acceptance within the religion as Christians demonstrate.
