BOOK REFLECTION ON “THE LEADER, THE TEACHER & YOU”
The book “THE LEADER, THE TEACHER & YOU” by Mr Lim Siong Guan has summarised many valuable experiences that he has acquired. It has helped me better understand how to be a better “teacher” and a “leader” in my family, work and life. The followings are some of my takeaways from the book.
Mr Lim started the book by talking about how a leader should be walking the ground and be there for the troops. As a Quality inspector, I have seen orders which are difficult to follow, or no longer relevant due to the dynamic changes of the operational world. By walking the ground, it enables a leader to pick up any emerging difficulties and constraints, and therefore better able to come up with solutions to improve the workplace. Recalling back the time when I was still a junior, where my WOIC was there to work with us. His presence, being there, really gave me the feeling that I am not alone, and that really motivated me. He showed me what a leader could be, and it is not all about “just talk”.
It was also mentioned in the book that if we keep choosing what we want to do, we are confining ourselves to the world we know. Therefore, missing out the opportunity to learn things that we never imagined we could. Taking on new things we do not know provides room for learning. No one knows everything. That is why we learn. As a leader, we must have the capacity to lead the change. Being is a leader is not that hard, but to be a good leader is never easy. Positive attitude, good values, great foresight and good communication skills are all required. A good leader is not only about leading, but also a responsibility to develop the potential under him.
