BOOK REFLECTION ON “THE LEADER, THE TEACHER & YOU”
The book “THE LEADER, THE TEACHER & YOU” by Mr Lim Siong Guan has summarised many valuable experiences that he has acquired. It has helped me better understand how to be a better “teacher” and a “leader” in my family, work and life. The followings are some of my takeaways from the book.
Mr Lim started the book by talking about how a leader should be walking the ground and be there for the troops. As a Quality inspector, I have seen orders which are difficult to follow, or no longer relevant due to the dynamic changes of the operational world. By walking the ground, it enables a leader to pick up any emerging difficulties and constraints, and therefore better able to come up with solutions to improve the workplace. Recalling back the time when I was still a junior, where my WOIC was there to work with us. His presence, being there, really gave me the feeling that I am not alone, and that really motivated me. He showed me what a leader could be, and it is not all about “just talk”.
It was also mentioned in the book that if we keep choosing what we want to do, we are confining ourselves to the world we know. Therefore, missing out the opportunity to learn things that we never imagined we could. Taking on new things we do not know provides room for learning. No one knows everything. That is why we learn. As a leader, we must have the capacity to lead the change. Being is a leader is not that hard, but to be a good leader is never easy. Positive attitude, good values, great foresight and good communication skills are all required. A good leader is not only about leading, but also a responsibility to develop the potential under him. This is how we can ensure sustainability of an organisation in the long
A leader is needed to challenge current thinking, influence a transitional movement and lead a group of people to carry out the new ideas. A good leader is required for others to identify qualities within themselves that closely reflect the thoughts, beliefs and actions of those they choose to follow. Without good leaders there would be no forward motion amongst the human race as there would be no one to take charge and inspire revolutionary events.
After reading over the book entitled, “The World’s Most Powerful Leadership Principle—How to Become a Servant Leader”, by James C. Hunter, I have learned that in order to lead one must serve. This book has provided me with the necessary principles needed to assist me as a Senior Executive Director at the UCF Community Care Center (UCCC). I like how the author specifically states that his book is not a way to teach one how to lead, rather it provides one with the path to take to be an effective leader. The book has assisted me the last few months in making a positive difference in the organization, especially being newly employed here at UCCC. My new employment here at UCCC has allowed me to have the character that one can know to respect, and has allowed me to slowly build authority, not through only

What makes a person a good business leader? A popular consensus seems to be that a good leader is able to not only understand each employee’s needs and abilities, but also motivate and empower that employee to use his abilities to the full. This requires that a leader take the time to understand the employee and to develop him to his full potential.
Effective leaders are rare. They are created through the trials and tribulations of managing or working with people in a variety of settings. Most good leaders have had their fair share of hard knocks that awakened them to the greater potential within their scope of influence. Effective leaders are excellent communicators, able to speak the many languages of the individuals within the groups they lead. Oftentimes the individual perspectives may appear different simply from the type of language they use. A good leader pays attention to the facts and then makes decisions based on objective analysis of those facts.
Good leadership is essential to business, to government and to the numerous groups and organisations that shape the way we live, work and play. Leadership is an important factor for making an organisation successful.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. Until fairly recently, I had never truly thought about what it means to be a good leader and just took it as a compliment. Leadership is an intangible concept which cannot be properly outlined in a dictionary, but one which must be formed and explained only through one’s own philosophies and experiences.
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
Considering a person to be a leader for an organisation is essential for successful business practises hence keeping in mind the certain characteristics an individual needs to have in order to be a leader and the responsibility of the leader to make sure that if any conflict arises they are able to handle the problem with care. They need to be able to manage themselves and people, to ‘drive them’ in order to allow them to strive to do their best.
To perform well as a leader, the leader must identify individual strengths, weaknesses, and potential; acquire knowledge of leadership, power, influence, and authority to get the right things done at the right time.
At some point in each person life, they will be required to lead others. For some this can be an exciting thought, while for others it can provoke fear and questions of capability. No matter a person’s reaction to this inevitable reality the unanimous response would be that generally people want to lead others well. In order to be prepared to lead people it is valued for a person to know what qualities can be found in an effective leader. Important characteristics a good leader has been shown to possess are being caring, innovative, and responsible.
To inspire your followers into higher levels of collaboration, there are certain things you must be, know, and, do. These do not come naturally, but are acquired through continual work and study. Good leaders are continually working and studying to improve their leadership skills; they are NOT resting on their achievements.
When we work together in a team, or in a broader sense as a society, the leader takes on the most important role. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole. Because of this, not anyone can be a leader. Only people with certain qualities and abilities are able to fill this role. So what makes a good leader? There is a defined path and specific characteristics that makes someone a good leader.
