In dealing with people of different ethnicity daily one can try to guess what your background would be. People decide based on a person’s skin color, religion, how they speak, and where they come from. While this is wrong to do, it’s just the way people are. For example, just because a person speaks with a Caribbean accent, does not mean they are from Jamaica. There are many countries in the Caribbean, but the dialect is different from region to region. If a person speaks Spanish, does not mean they are Puerto Rican; it just means they are of a Spanish decent. Two of the women are of a fair complexion and mixed with a different ethnicity. All of the women were friends growing up, but Irene as always, treated differently than the other woman. Clare is married to Jack, who does not know that his wife is of black descendants. Jack often calls Clare “Nig” which Irene found to be very insulting to her and her race. Jack makes a comment to his wife “I know you’re no nigger, so it’s all right”. “No niggers in my family, never have and never will”. (Larsen, 1929). Irene amuses Jack’s ignorance, but knows that his wife is a nigger. Jack believes his wife Clare has the same beliefs, he has but states that she wants to look like them. Jack looked at blacks as devils who rob and kill people. It took all Irene had in her to not let Jack know that he was “surrounded by three black devils, drinking tea”. (Larsen, 1929). Irene could not believe how calm she handled the entire encounter with Jack; but inside all she could feel was anger and shame for Clare. As Irene and Gertrude end the day and leave, they speak amongst themselves. They could not believe how Clare was taking such a risky chance with her husband not knowing her true ethnicity. The women did not know that was has Jack felt about black people and the fact that they did not say anything. Jack was totally clueless. But in the end Clare was happy with her life and believes it’s all worth it in the end. Once again, Roberta and Twyla meet at and uppity grocery store; Roberta has climbed up the social ladder and tries to play nice. However, when Twyla brings up Maggie, Roberta tells a different story than what Twyla remembers and then tries to defend her past behavior towards Twyla by saying “‘You know how everything was (141).’” Roberta’s defense mechanism by blaming the times shows the reader just how prevalent instilled racism is between the two. Likewise, the plot reaches a climax when the women meet a third time at their children’s schools during integration. The two begin a full-on picket war with one another because Twyla catches Roberta protesting the integration of schools and when confronted, believes she is doing nothing wrong. Tensions rise when the two mirror the phrase “’I wonder what made me think you were different (143).’” This admission to social and racial differences expresses the theme of the story and opens one another’s eyes to what has really happened between the
Mrs. Turner is a mixed woman who dislikes and is racist towards darker black people. Mrs. Turner wants Janie to leave Tea Cake and go with her light-skinned brother. Janie isn’t interested, and Tea Cake despises Mrs. Turner. She views white people as some type of god whereas the black people are merely worshipers. Janie is also lighter skinned, so Mrs. Turner enjoys Janie’s company. Janie’s uninterested self feels that Mrs. Turner is racist but harmless. Tea Cake goes out of his way to get rid of Mrs. Turner with the fight in her restaurant.

Ruth is a black slave employed by white loyalists, along with her sister, Isabel. When Ruth does not understand why they face social injustice, she turns to her sister to help her. Ruth laughs at her master, which is prohibited. Ruth’s master, Madam, then turns to beat Ruth, but instead Isabel takes the beating, “Craaack! Lightning struck from a blue sky; Madam slapped my face so hard it near threw me to the ground” (Anderson 33). When Ruth laughs at her master, her master gets extremely upset. Ruth turns to Isabel out of confusion and the master beats Isabel instead, who willingly takes the blame for her loved one. The only reason that her master can beat the girls is because they are black. This is socially unjust because Ruth and Isabel are being discriminated against just because of their race. Furthermore, when Ruth has a seizure, as she is doing chores for her master, her master comes to the conclusion that she is possessed and starts to beat her. Ruth turns to Isabel, and Isabel reacts by protecting her, “I threw myself on top of my sister. The broom came down on my back, once, twice, but it didn’t matter. I had to keep her safe until the storm passed” (Anderson 94). Ruth looks to her sister, Isabel, during times of social injustice. Morrison leaves out the race of Twyla and Roberta to inadvertently expose the role of learned racism in the world of “Recitatif.” Upon entering St. Bonny’s, Twyla is placed in a room with a girl from a completely different race and assesses the situation, “And Mary, that’s my mother, she was right. Every now and then she would stop dancing long enough to tell me something important and one of the things she said was that they never washed their hair and they smelled funny.” (Morrison 1). In the novel, Passing, Nella Larsen presents two women, Clare and Irene who originate from the black community; however still yearn for an assured identity for themselves. Clare and Irene are childhood friends who even though being part black, are able to pass as white folk. Irene continues to be part of the black community and is considered a black woman, however this is on a superficial level. When it comes to her advantage, Irene occasionally passes as white. Clare on the other hand passes as a white woman; her lifestyle changed completely as to white standards and in. Although both women are in a dilemma regarding their true racial identity, they both wish to live as both black and white. Throughout the book, both women attempt to achieve an integrated identity, however fail do to so. Their failure in attempting to live a life both as black suggests and supports the idea that a person can only have one race as either black or white, not both.

Clare exemplified the archetypal character of the tragic mulatto, as she bought tragedy to her own life and all those she came in contact. Clare’s presence forced Irene to contend with feelings of internalized racism, and thus feelings of inferiority. Through diction, tone, and imagery Larsen makes it luminous to readers that "passing" may seem glamorous, however, the sacrifice one makes to do so is not without consequences for themselves and those they care about. Larsen does not allow her readers to perch on the belief that once a member of the dominate group ones life is not without pain and suffering. Every action, even those that seem to make life easier, have consequences.
Lily and Rosaleen arrive on the outskirts of Tiburon, after a combination of hitchhiking and walking, hungry and tired. Unfortunately, many people’s family trees are twisted and inaccurate, containing many flaws known only by those who are wronged, but believed by the children who read it. For example, some female immigrants, upon moving to America and marrying a white man, changed their names and accepted the white cultural as their own. With no birth records on hand, it was assumed, when recorded, that the said female was White. The same happened frequently to the Native American people, who accepted English culture as their own. There is a whole line of cultural background completely wiped from one’s tree. These cases, which are quite common, can only be disputed either by the person who is recorded, who is presumably now dead, or hearsay by family members who claim it to be another way. Regardless, it is nearly impossible to prove. Therefore, claiming to know one’s heritage is likely false, due to the frequent inaccuracies in records, and gives no assurance to anyone on their true
In the book, the readers see the wall between black and white people during the movement. An example is a reaction to Fern’s doll which is white, while Fern, however, is black. On pg.65, it reads, “‘Li’l Sis, are you a white girl or a black girl?’ Fern said, ‘I’m a colored girl.’ He didn’t like the sound of a colored girl,’ He said, ‘Black girl.’ Fern said, ‘Colored.’ ‘Black girl.”

From my appearance, people generally presume my nationality is some sort of Caucasian origin and once I tell them I’m Guatemalan, their face fills with a shock. Individuals always questions me after my response, asking if I'm really am. I find it insulting people automatically think i'm white or even argue with me saying I'm not Latino. Do I have to look a certain way to be Guatemalan? Does my looks identify what my ethnicity is? Because my ethnicity is an American citizen, raised by Hispanic parents, born and raised in Rhode island.
When she first is confronted by the problem or race it hits her with a thump. Bob takes Alice to dinner where she states, “I don’t want feel like being refused” (55). Alice does what she can to avoid the face of racism. She lacks the integration within the different community, which gives her a one-path perspective. While going to the restaurant with Bob, he asks, “Scared because you haven’t got the white folks to cover you” (55)? She doesn’t have the protection of her friends or her parents to shy away from the truth of her being African American. She is hiding behind a mask because she’s passing as white. She’s accepting the assumption that she belongs to their culture. When she goes out, “with white folks the people think you’re white” (60). But, when she goes out with Bob there is nothing to hide behind. She’s confronted with the truth. Already feeling low about the restaurant, and getting pulled over by the cops, she uses her wealth to get out of the situation. She says, “I am a supervisor in the Los Angeles Welfare” (63).
