This includes learning more about their language, culture, values, family, and home environment. This knowledge will help you to better support your students in the classroom …show more content…
I knew I would get a wide range of answers and views on school. First, I wanted to discuss school in general. What were their feelings about school? Did they look forward to getting up in the morning and coming to school? In the back of my mind I thought I knew the answer, but I was completely wrong. Gunner loves coming to school. He explained that he actually likes school now that he can read! “Reading is awesome!” Gunner explained,”I come to school and read all the books the the library.” When I asked Hannah about school, I got the answer I expected. Hannah explained that she loved school, but only when she does good. Andrew’s answer was shocking. Andrew loves coming to school. When I asked Andrew what he liked about coming to school, his response was simple,”It makes me happy!” According to Goretti Horgan (2012), ninety percent of children living in poverty do not like school. They often get bullied because of their appearance and find it hard to make friends. I am happy to know that Andrew is not in that ninety percent. He loves school and no that he feels more confident knowing that he can come to school and take showers, he finds it easier to make
As American’s we place a high level of importance on attending school and receiving a certain level of education. Across the world, the recommendations for attending school vastly differ based on the culture of the society. In America, we require our children to attend school until they are almost of legal age, push high school graduates to attend college and we constantly emphasize structured learning. Many children in today’s world lack many skills that would allow them to “teach” themselves outside of school leading to an increased interest in televisions, computers, and phones. Technology has taken away society’s attention away from independent learning such as reading, writing, and outside experiences. John Taylor Gatto’s emotional voice in his writing “Against School” has allowed me reveal my psychological voice regarding the educational system.
The controversial topic about the function of school is discussed at many school board and PTA meetings throughout America. In Anita Garland’s opinion, schools are not functioning properly. Garland states her reasons as to why the purpose of school has to change in her article, “Lets Really Reform Our Schools”, where she starts off by saying, “Desperate illnesses require desperate remedies. And our schools are desperately ill.” She proceeds to list the remedies in order to transform our schools into a more healthy, successful environment. First, Garland claims that the students who are not interested in studying should not be allowed, better yet, never forced to attend school with kids who want to receive
It is said that most people perceive post-secondary education to not be important as it actually is. College graduates have the advantage of being able to have a better chance of having a quality life (study.com). A girl named Savita Doke from Mumbai, India got her Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science by working hard. Despite the fact that Doke was extremely poor she still worked every night at her job in order to pay for her schooling. After she graduated from college she was able to get a well-paying job to support her family financially. Savita said her most important life goal was reached (DNAIndia, 2015). Although, Adam Ozimek believes people can get good paying jobs without having to go to college. Ozimek stated
‘Oh gosh!’ I thought on the third day of school, I was totally exhausted of homework. Well to most of the people, this a major deja vu, that attended middle school. So from that day and onward I ‘started’ to do all my homework, whether I wanted to do it or not.. There are a couple of important logical explanations why homework is an important part of all ‘middle schoolers’ lives. The concept of homework is that is is supposed to help you have a better understanding of what you learned at school and keep the content (that you learned in school) fresh in your mind. The other important thing about homework is that it directly reflects on your grade; which is important for success in school.
A college education has been linked to the American Dream. The American Dream consists of accomplishing dreams and success in the United States. Society has established an emphasis that a college degree will lead to economic and social happiness, but it is important to take a step back and realize that a college degree is not the only way to achieve success and accomplish the American Dream. This socially constructed norm has considered students as disappointments when they choose to not pursue or realized that a college path is not for them. Even though a college education is believed by all as an essential part to an individual’s success, it is not entirely the path to everyone’s success. There are going to be students who are not going to want or be able to pursue a college education, and for those, instead of labeling as automatic failures, there needs to be promoting of alternative routes. A college education is a privilege not a necessity, it will not determine if a person success or failure.
Going to school is something that children do at a young age. The idea of school is ingrained into children at as early as six weeks of age in a daycare. As the child grows older they enter elementary school, middle school, and then high school. Within the schools there are students, administrative staff, nurses, volunteers, and of course teachers. Then questions are asked. What really is the purpose of school? How can a teacher gain student’s attention when they are thinking about things outside of school? How are the students different from one another? What determines between a good and bad teacher? How can character be successfully be integrated into schools? These are a few questions that were addressed in the book You Can’t Teach Through
Diversity is important in education. Also, communication with parents is important. However, some students may have two moms or two dads, but they should still be included in their child’s education. As a child, there are several things that can impact a child’s life. One impact many children go through is family divorce. This impacts the child’s education because the mom feels she should be the only one involved or vice versa. However, the goal of this article is to prepare teachers to respond to the needs of all students, no matter their background. Also, it wants to make teachers aware that all students’ needs are different no matter their family structure. Each and everyday there are several different cultures entering this country or getting married. As a teacher, it is important to understand each student’s background. This is a good idea because a teacher does not want to offend a student or parents. A teacher’s job is to have a diverse classroom no matter the sexuality (Page 84) or the social status (Page 84) of families. A teacher is there to provide instruction, but also support. For example, a student’s family may be poor and the student comes to school with torn clothes and shoes. A teacher in this situation should communicate with the family about the situation and get them help. Also, the article discusses family diversity as
Students need to be actively involved in the classroom by asking questions and participating in classroom activities. The students is also responsible for doing homework. If the student does not complete homework or school assignments then they are hurting themselves. The teacher can encourage students to do their work and also hold them out of activities till they do their work. This still will not help at home the students have to be responsible enough to do their homework. Students also need to be paying attention in class and participating in the class activities. The students will learn best when they are actively engaged in the lesson. Students are the most important part of education. Students are why schools are here. The most important part of education is to make sure students are learning and are able to apply the skills they learn. Students are the main focus of
Students need a strong bond with their teachers, especially at a young age, so they will want to learn and feel needed in the classroom. Miscommunication can happen when teachers do not understand or listen to what their students need, "It takes a very special kind of listening, listening that requires not only open eyes and ears, but open heart and minds" (Delpit, 1995, 46). Miscommunication can cause so many problems within the classroom. Minority student can feel discriminated against, and they will then not want to continue their education. Teachers need to try and understand all of these different cultures to make sure that students have an interest in
Each person carries things with them, whether it’s a purse, or a backpack, or a slim wallet slid into their pocket. They may not carry these physical things all of the time, but these staple items are with more than they’re not. The become a part of the person’s identity. They become emotional burdens for the person to bear.
Many People wonder if it i important to have a college education. While some people think it is okay not to have one, others think it is a must. Most people think that “In today’s increasingly global, knowledge-based economy, education has never been more important” (Fact Sheet: Empowering States to Transform the Education Landscape). While college can help a person make more money, have increased opportunities, and find jobs with better benefits, it is also very expensive, time consuming, and risky.
It is essential that teachers know and understand this and know how to properly support their students. A socially just teachers needs to know what each individual student needs in order to succeed and do everything in their power to help them get there. Teachers need to be an advocate for their students and create an environment that is safe for them to be themselves and succeed. A highly effective teacher is someone who is great at teaching concepts from a textbook, but, more importantly, can teach life lessons. Teachers have the ability to change lives. They will influence the students and they need to lead by example. If a teacher treats specific cultures differently than others, students will do that. But, if teachers promote diversity and inclusion, students will follow. Students living in poverty should not be targeted, bullied, or feel unsafe to come to school. They are just as equally important than a child not living in poverty. If the teacher can connect and try to relate to the child, then they may encourage them to take a step further with their education and to better themselves throughout their life. Education is the key way to improve life and the one thing that can get someone out of the poverty cycle. Each and every child should feel that they have their teacher on their side and they are advocating for them. Without this, students will fall behind and may become disinterested in
History is a series of important past events that connect with something. History is what makes people make better decisions. There are many definitions of history and everyone has their own.
The quality of teaching in a classroom makes the biggest learning outcome. Effective teaching leads to the improvement in a student’s achievement. Measuring effective teaching against the progress of a student is a must. It is the belief of all schools that all students must have equalising starting points which means that no matter what background a child comes from they should have the same opportunity for learning.
Study is necessary to succeed. Study is a good way to develop our mental. Study can increase our experience and knowledge. Study can also train our mind to understand the complexities of the subject chosen and then apply that understanding in practical terms. Through study, we can learn how to discipline ourselves to do something you don’t want to do, which will help us succeed in anything in our life.
