Was the Missouri Compromise or the Compromise of 1850 more likely to be supported by the slave states? Why? There was a conflict with slavery back in the early 1800’s. Henry Clay proposed some plans to make everyone happy. The Missouri Compromise happened first in 1820. Southerners worried that if Missouri became a free state that they could take the majority of Congress and ban slaves altogether, so Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state. That kept the balance in Congress.
