Can someone so wealthy escape death itself? That is what Prince Prospero tried to achieve in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death”. When the Red Death came, the prince took the noble members of his kingdom and himself to a castellated abbey. They had wine, entertainment, and whatever they needed to sustain a happy life. The prince decided to have a masquerade one day. Then, a mysterious figure showed up out of nowhere. Prince Prospero was with rage when he saw him and chased him through the rooms. At the final room, Prospero approached the masked figure and fell to the ground. As other people tried to take off the mask of the person, they found nothing and everyone died. The hidden message in Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” is that no one came escape death. The ebony clock in the black and red room represent the time that has passed in their lifetime. A mysterious guest made its way in the abbey somehow. Everyone was scared to say anything, but Prospero was angry at the mysterious guest for having a poor taste of humor. He chased the figure towards the rooms until the last one. Once there, Prospero approaches the figure with a dagger, but fell to the ground dead. As other tried to unmask the figure, they found nothing underneath the robe and everyone fell to the floor, dead. Poe says, “And now was acknowledge the presence of the Red Death. Hutchinson and Prince Prospero. Both their deaths were at the hands of their own communities. Their own kin were a part of their demise. “It isn’t fair, it isn’t right, Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her” (Poe 372). The whole village crowded around Mrs. Hutchinson and stoned her to death. This was just tradition, but Mrs. Hutchinson did not in the least expect that tradition would release its wrath upon her on that awful day. All people wish to avoid suffering, and those with wealth usually take too long to realize that they cannot avert it. In this story, Prince Prospero and his wealthy friends hide away in a castle to evade death. This obviously does not work, as death is inevitable, but of course, they attempt to save themselves anyways. In “The Masque of the Red Death”, Poe uses the courtiers, Prince Prospero, and the stranger to symbolize the members of the influential upper class and their habit of using their power to postpone their own impending doom.

Poe continues to describe the blue room, noting how clear and bright the color is, saying,“...vividly blue were its windows,” (4). This description has a very positive impact on the readers, as they associate the color of the room with positive feelings of a new beginning. The deathly ringing of the clock resonated throughout the chambers and faded away like they always had. But this time, the festivities did not flare back to life, for the new figure had control over the attention of everyone. This unique figure was shrouded in a robe as black as a void that covered all of his body except for his face, which was concealed by a peculiar mask. Contrary to the darkness of the robes, the lean mask was a pure, ghostly white with two blood red, curved lines, thicker at the top of the mask and thinner towards the bottom, through the eyes which were void holes. The air around him was cold and stale, like death lingered around him, waiting for its next victim. From the outskirts of the crowd, he moved in closer to the revelers, with each step echoing unnaturally loud. People shuffled away from him, afraid some terrible fate may befall them if they get close in proximity to him, as he strolled toward some unknown destination.
The characters in “The Mask of the Red Death” include Prince Prospero (who is the only person that speaks in the story), a multitude (a thousand) of the Prince’s wealthy friends, and the masked figure, which doesn’t appear until the end of the story. Edgar Allen Poe, in the short story “The Masque of the Red Death”, shows how people may try to outsmart death and surpass it, but in the end they will die since death is inevitable. He reveals this in the book by showing all the people closed up in the abbey that belongs to Prince Prospero. They are trying to escape the “Red Death” and think that they can escape the death by hiding away in the abbey. They manage to stay safe for six months but in the end they all die after the stroke of midnight during the masquerade ball Prince Prospero puts on from the Red Death itself which appears after midnight and leaves no survivors in the end. Poe develops the theme of how no one can escape death through the use of the point of view, the setting, and symbolism.
Towards the end of the story, the people encounter the masked man resembling the Red Death and Prospero chases him through the rooms. When the people follow Poe states “ Then summoning the wild courage of despair a throng of the revellers at once threw themselves into the black apartment.”(10). They avoided the black room all night but when all the chaos happened they threw themselves in the room to find out what happened.
