Can someone so wealthy escape death itself? That is what Prince Prospero tried to achieve in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death”. When the Red Death came, the prince took the noble members of his kingdom and himself to a castellated abbey. They had wine, entertainment, and whatever they needed to sustain a happy life. The prince decided to have a masquerade one day. Then, a mysterious figure showed up out of nowhere. Prince Prospero was with rage when he saw him and chased him through the rooms. At the final room, Prospero approached the masked figure and fell to the ground. As other people tried to take off the mask of the person, they found nothing and everyone died. The hidden message in Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” is that no one came escape death. The ebony clock in the black and red room represent the time that has passed in their lifetime. Every time an hour passes, it makes a loud ring that can be heard everywhere in the abbey. Throughout the ring,everyone is silent. A mysterious guest made its way in the abbey somehow. Everyone was scared to say anything, but Prospero was angry at the mysterious guest for having a poor taste of humor. He chased the figure towards the rooms until the last one. Once there, Prospero approaches the figure with a dagger, but fell to the ground dead. As other tried to unmask the figure, they found nothing underneath the robe and everyone fell to the floor, dead. Poe says, “And now was acknowledge the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall”(Poe 461).
