Institute of medicine (IOM) has produced several important guidelines and recommendations for the entire U.S. healthcare industry since its establishment. The main objectives of IOM are to empower the care delivery system, nursing division for future generation of care, and advocacy to the patient with low income/ disability. The report encourages all nursing care personnel to peruse higher degree in nursing and participate in life learning process. “Nurses receiving seamless education, higher degrees and preparedness to function in varied settings and permitting them to work to the full extent of their education and training would make the healthcare more accessible, cost-effective and of superior quality” (IOM, 2010). The joint report published by IOM and RWJF encourages all care providers to integrate innovative care delivery system, modern medical technologies to aid care delivery process, and use evidence based data gathering and monitoring approach during the care giving process thus a detailed patient’s care related data can be captured, which later can ignite advanced concept for future evidence based nursing …show more content…
The report also encourages all care provider to support their working nursing personnel with associate degree in nursing (ADN) to go for their bachelor degree in nursing (BSN). “To achieve the aforesaid aim they successfully organized both state and national level Campaign for Action through forming action-coalitions of different groups like nurses, clients, educators, business leaders, consumers, other health leaders etc.” (RWJF, 2013). RWJF and IOM together developed an education health promotion module to encourage all care personnel to focus on community-based illness rather than focusing on acute care. The IOM report had four key messages needed for advancing the future of nursing. “Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training; achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression; be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, …and; effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure” (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The report also included eight recommendations needed to facilitate the necessary changes to in the nursing profession so meet to demands of the healthcare reform.
Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being. Health promotion as it relates to nursing is about us empowering our patients to increase their control over their lives and well beings and includes: focusing on their health not just illness, empowering our patients, recognizing that health involves many dimensions and is also effected by factors outside of their control (Whitehead et al. 2008)..

The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. Healthcare is a continuous emerging industry across the world. With our ever changing life styles and the increased levels of pollution across the world more and more people are suffering from various health issues. Nursing is an extremely diverse profession and among the highest educated with several levels ranging from a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to a registered nurse (RN) on up to a Doctorate in Nursing. In closing, as the healthcare climate consistently changes across the United States, it is imperative that registered nurses understand the demand for superior knowledge and lifelong commitment to nursing. As nursing theory and practice expand, our role as leaders is to place a high priority on our commitment to educate and guide nurses, thus improving the lives of their patients through the support of transformational leadership. The Institute of Medicine’s recent report, The Future of Nursing – Leading Change, Advancing Health, specifically calls for nurses to advance and embrace leadership roles on all levels and fronts – from collaborative improvement to positive identification of areas facing challenges within the healthcare setting.

Profession of Nursing is always regards as a complex, dynamic and noble. The nursing profession requires many things such as hard work, a vast knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a passion for the noble profession. All these qualities are needed to be an effective nurse. Today, nurses are living in a world of ever changing field of medicine .The present patient statistics poses, nurses are expected to take responsibility of accomplishing the requirements. The requirement for excellent nursing skills is added as well as well-formed skills in different aspect. Because of the high demand in excellent nursing care, the IOM have declared the recommendations for the future of nursing.

Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Several years ago in 2008 the RWJF and the IOM collaborated for two years to discern the future needs of the nursing profession. Most importantly, the objective was to outline the critical actions needed to ensure nursing was ready to seamlessly move towards the future. This was no easy task as nurses work in such diverse settings such as outpatient areas, acute care settings, the community, and long term settings to name a few. Couple this with the fact that nurses have a variety of educational avenues such as the associates, diploma, or bachelor’s degree open to them to achieve the status of registered nurse (Institute of Medicine, 2010). All of this considered, the committee did design four key messages regarding the future of nursing as key in the transformation of health care as evidenced in their "Future of Nursing" report.
From the literature I learned about the importance of driving the nursing profession towards the community health-care system. There is currently a need for revitalization of the primary health care system as stated in this document. There is a need to change some of the focus of education and training in new nurses in an effort to respond to the health care demands of today and the future, since many students are not going into this field. In addition, nurses already working in community health should begin focusing on current prevention and promotion aspects of health. I plan to apply these ideas in my own nursing practice to this rotation.
