Black Voices Matter A common phrase that I like is, “If you do not stand for something then you will fall for anything.” That phrase defines the reasons and motives of the Black Lives Matter Protest. The black community is choosing to stand for something, serving as a voice, explaining to the world that black lives matter as much as anyone else’s life. I am proud that they are choosing to do this because I believe the Black Lives Matter movement brings positivity and unity to the black community which is just what America needs. The Black Lives Matter Movement informs us about all the latest events that are taking place and shows how black people around the world are being treated. After the Trayvon Martin incident my mother informed me that perhaps it would be wiser if I stayed in the house more. I am sure that other mothers urged their children to do the same because no mother wanted to feel the pain that Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, was forced to endure knowing her child was dead. David Bredrick states, “How can we forget that America codified in the Constitution the notion that a black life was only considered to be three fifths of a white life?”. Knowing this and being a black male or female can haunt the mind, followed by a constant feeling of being unwanted in this country. Now living in the past is something that I am not in favor of, but forgetting the past is something that I am not in favor of either. America would rather forget the four hundred years of slavery black people went through and the years of discrimination and torture that has happened. Since America stands for this big thing on unity they would only like to hear about that instead of racism. The issues of how technology is influencing our nation today has come into play with social media and surveillance in our personal lives. We use twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. to express our opinions on things and as a voice to inform people on what’s going on in today’s society. We have learned how to use the tools we’ve been given to change our lives forever; our government has access to all of our personal information in exchange for our protection against terrorism. I believe the best place to start this essay would be with an explanation of Black Power. Black Power according to James H. Cone “is an emotionally charged term that can evoke either angry rejection or passionate acceptance.” Critics see it as blacks hating whites, while advocates see Black Power as the only viable option for black people. Advocates see Black Power meaning black people are taking a dominate role in deciding what the black-white relationship should be in American Society. Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr. is preaching this right now. He sees that blacks need to go back to their blackness and no longer live their lives as the white society wants them to.
The main claim of the article is that African Americans have been treated unfairly throughout history and are still being treated unfairly compared to Caucasians. One of the reasons given in support of the claim is “In the early 20th century, civil rights groups documented cases in which African-Americans died horrible deaths after being turned away from hospitals reserved for whites, or were lynched — which meant being hanged, burned or dismembered — in front of enormous crowds that had gathered to enjoy the sight.” (Editorial Board, screen 3) Another reason given in support of the claim comes from the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. saying “The dead have something to say to a complacent federal government that cuts back-room deals with Southern Dixiecrats, as well as to every Negro who has passively accepted the evil system of segregation and who has stood on the sidelines in a mighty struggle for justice.” (Editorial Board, screen 3) The argument consisted of several components such as quotes from famous activists and referring to historical events involving African Americans being victims. Black lives matter is a social media movement that went of the Ferguson, Gardner cases etc. Also very rapidly it was to show as a opposition to the police and cops. Somehow when saying black lives matter it was like saying all life matter don’t matter. It’s a touchy subject due to why people view things and for most case I can understand. This organization was created by Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi in 2012 after George Zimmerman was acquitted for the killing of Trayvon Martin. The Black Lives Matter movement originally started as a hashtag used on social media. Thousands of people used this hashtag to discuss issues in the African American community and to bring to light the ways in which African Americans were being oppressed by the government. By using social media the hashtag spread quickly and as the word got out, the Black Lives Matter movement started to hold peaceful protests around the country. Their main goal is to rebuild the black liberation movement and to ensure that all black voices are heard, especially voices that have been silenced in the past such as African American women and the LGBT community. They believe that state violence directly suppresses African Americans from progressing. Throughout history, African Americans have encountered an overwhelming amount of obstacles for justice and equality. You can see instances of these obstacles especially during the 1800’s where there were various forms of segregation and racism such as the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan terrorism, Jim- Crow laws, voting restrictions. These negative forces asserted by societal racism were present both pre and post slavery. Although blacks were often seen as being a core foundation for the creation of society and what it is today, they never were given credit for their work although forced. This was due to the various laws and social morals that were sustained for over 100 years throughout the United States. However, what the world didn’t know was that African Americans were a strong ethnic group and these oppressions and suffrage enabled African Americans for greatness. It forced African Americans to constantly have to explore alternative routes of intellectuality, autonomy and other opportunities to achieve the “American Dream” especially after the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed after the Civil War.
This movement is about the equality of African Americans and saying that their lives matter just as much as other races who get more rights and freedom. This movement has gone on since the time of Martin Luther King Jr. In society, African Americans are lesser than whites and are given less rights, but in the Black Lives Matter movement, not only African Americans, but also many other races are going against what society says and protesting for rights from which they deserve. Black liberation started the American struggles of the 1960’s. In liberation theology there are 2 groups, the oppressed and the oppressor. The poor are the oppressed and the rich are their oppressors. This kind of theology contextualizes Christianity in an attempt to help those of African descent overcome oppression.
