Discussion on Domain E Domain E focuses on creating and maintaining an effective environment for student’s learning. This Teacher Performance Expectation concentrates on the following components: First, the teacher should create a physical environment that engages all students. For instance; classroom arrangement should be structured that will promote learning. Students should feel good being in the classroom environment, all the things inside that include posters, classroom design, and furniture arrangement. Second, the teacher should motivate the students, provide suitable reinforcement and feedback, and maintain appropriate expectations. This factor is critical in keeping the students’ interest. The teacher must be able to diffuse any situations that may escalate to conflict or violence. With this in mind, the teacher should remember how to handle challenging behavior and apply positive behavior support. Fourth, the teacher should demonstrate the knowledge and ability to support the movement, mobility, sensory, and specialized health care needs required for students to access classrooms, schools and the community to the fullest extent of their ability and the law. Students with limited mobility will have a specific spot close to the entrance of the classroom. It is essential to have enough room where students can move around and push wheelchairs or other mobility equipment. Fifth, the teacher, should demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to provide behavioral, social, and environmental supports, including the ability to design and implement positive behavioral support plans, as well as create healthy learning environments for the safety and learning of students with disabilities. For example, creating a safe environment where all students feel welcome and acknowledged will help make the student feel recognized and appreciated. This should lead to the students wanting to make a personal contribution to following …show more content…
For instance, having the chairs arranged in small groups can motivate the kids to socialize and work together to develop camaraderie. Additionally, the rewards system will motivate the students to work and finish their task. For example, if the student likes to play computer games, he/she will be excited to finish his/her work because he/she is looking forward to being on the computer at a particular time. Furthermore, the classroom procedures will be useful for managing the student 's’ behavior. If the student knows the classroom rules, he/she will remember to behave because he/she knows there are consequences for inappropriate conduct. Also, the classroom routine and having a timer are very helpful in setting appropriate time to a particular activity. For instance, setting 20 minutes for stations and instructing all students to change locations when the time is over is a good indicator of time management. Likewise, the behavior contract will help the teacher reinforce positive behavior inside and outside the classroom. Designing a safe and healthy environment for everybody is
Whether it was in school, the classroom or the home environment students with disabilities may exhibit various behavioral problems. Occasionally, these behaviors are hostile, aggressive, and disruptive and may impede learning for the ones who display such behaviors as well as others. It often a challenge to deliver a lesson or maintain control of the class due to the fact that teacher may not have sufficient knowledge on how to manage these types of behaviors. In “When the Chips are Down” Richard Lavoie give helpful advice that emphasizes on dealing with behavioral issues in a successful manner and also how these problems can be anticipated before they start.
...successful interactions between student with disabilities and their classmates because these interactions do not happen naturally. Students with disabilities need to engage socially with their classmates. The more interaction the general class has with these students the more comfortable they will be.
More specifically, safeguarding the rights of students with disabilities, while maintaining a safe learning environment for all are top priorities. I currently oversee a middle school who has a large special education population, as 23% of the students receive special education related services. In addition, the school has two new assistant principals who have limited administration and special education experience. Providing ongoing support as well as relevant information is critical. Sharing evidenced-based practices combined with elements of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBiS) has proven to be beneficial. It is imperative students with disabilities who engage in maladaptive behaviors are exposed to proactive interventions as opposed to reactive response. A suspension may mask the issue, as the primary root of the behavior is not addressed. Creating functional equivalent replacement behaviors (FERBS) that seek to meet the behavior need in a more appropriate fashion is
Least restrictive environment (LRE) is among the six standards enacted by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), to govern the education of students with various special needs and disabilities (Jacob, Decker, & Hartshorne, 2010, p. 106). The other five principles are; free and appropriate public education, individualized education program, parent participation requirement and the protection of rights of children with disabilities and their parents (Farris, 2002, p. 1). This principle supports the education of students with disabilities together with non-disabled learners to the greatest extent that is appropriate. This means that the special needs student should be allowed access to the education curriculum, extra and co-curricular activities and any other program that non disabled scholars benefit from. The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is among the public school districts that offer least restrictive environment opportunities for special needs students. This paper which is an interview with the special education coordinator of the San Francisco Unified School District; addresses various issues concerning least restrictive environment.
Establishing rules for certain times and areas in the classroom. Awarding rewards for positive behavior and doing what is expected. An example might be the rules for the reading nook. The reading nook is only to be used at specific times, you may not lay on each other, you are only to read books. There is no talking at the reading nook. Students who use the reading nook appropriately and consistently can earn a ticket, which is a school wide reward, or I could have my own classroom reward system. A classroom reward system might be when positive appropriate behaviors are observed as a class as a whole they earn a point towards a popcorn party or extra
Today’s classrooms are designed after a few key theories. One of which is behaviorism. Behaviorism is the idea that we can control others through intervention as a higher order of animals. One of the guiding principles of behaviorism is scheduling, which helps initiate behaviorism strategies of learning. One of those strategies is contracting in which a teacher and a student negotiate to create a desirable outcome. Another is a token economy which uses contracting and scheduling to produce systematic results. In addition, prompting is the idea that a student will know what to do if a certain activity occurs. Modeling is simply the idea that your behavior will determine that of your students. Finally, Rote learning is the concept of use it
In reflecting about all that I have learned during my first five years of teaching, I have found it to be a very humbling experience. As a first year teacher, people always complement you on your new and innovative ideas, but that quickly wears off when you are faced with changing district climates, new co-workers, and of course the state and national politics of education. At the beginning of my PDP, I selected teacher standards 4, 5 and 10.
Modern classrooms are essential to students and their education. the learning space should be contemporary and enable for learners of all learning styles and methods. it is essential that focus is on the learner and that their environment is created to aid them. As stated, it is important for classrooms to implement both a behaviourist approach as well as a social-cultural approach. this allows for the lack of intimate education with the child on a personal level to be achieved and create self-fulfilled learners. It caters for a broader range of teaching and allows for students to be taught more creative principles, where the behaviourist approach fails.
One obstacle that I believe many special needs students and families will face is understanding and dealing with the disability itself. Speaking from experience, this process can take time to understand and accept. This is where a special education teacher plays a significant role, assisting the student and family with information and support for understanding the student’s disability, facilitating education programs, and most importantly hope and progress for a bright future. Another obstacles that students with disabilities may face, is social interaction and acceptance. It is vital that all special education teachers and programs, try to incorporate strong social connections with their regular education peers and other community members and
Teachers have exerted extensive control over their classrooms. Each classroom and each teacher has a list of rules posted inside their classrooms or on the first or second page of the students’ binder. These rules make an effort to direct the behaviours of students by adjusting the way in which they conduct themselves so to create a controlled setting. Since there is only one teacher and an average of 30 students in a classroom, if limitations and rules are not put in place then chaos will be effortless. As a part of maintaining control, most classrooms are set up with a rigid order of seating or more generally called a seating plan. At the beginning of the school year, students choose a seat and that will be their station for the rest of the year. For approximately 75 minutes each day, students are confined in a quadrangle with a desk and chair and a class controller that teaches the norms and behavioural expectations in society. At the end of the day learners exit classrooms through one mode of exit which also doubles as an entrance. The inputting of rules, the utilization of stric...
... lunch room, distributing materials, carrying messages to office etc. These tasks can be assigned to different students every week. Effective teachers make sure that every student has a job so that they feel responsible. These activities can also be used to reward improved behavior (Evertson, Emmer, and Worsham, 2006). Jones describes routines as operational rules. Jones says, “Operational rules must be specified to provide for smooth operations, which include materials to use, when to sharpen pencils, get a drink, go to the bathroom, how to get help and how the class is dismissed” (Allen, 1998). An effective way of establishing routines would be considering each and every minute detail of classroom activities. Children should know the importance of rules and routines in the classroom and it is a teacher’s responsibility to teach them (Canter &Canter, 1992).
Classroom management has the largest effect on student achievement, so students cannot learn in poorly managed classroom. Additionally, research has pointed out that the quality of teacher-student relationships is the main aspect of classroom management.(…2). Furthermore, when teachers set classroom management plan, the plan will give structure to everything from seating to lessons to grading to the relationship between students. Teachers should incorporate strategies for addressing student behavior into classroom
Classroom management is a necessary component to every classroom. It includes creating a set of rules and clear expectations that all students follow. This helps unify the classroom for both the teacher and students allowing for a smooth, effective, and educational environment. When the students are aware of what is expected, they are motivated in order to attain the goals dispensed by the teacher. Some students are naturally motivated and want nothing more than to surpass goals for the sake of triumph and pleasing the teacher. Other students need extrinsic motivation in order for them to become engaged in
In this assignment, I worked with students that had been removed from their regular school setting due to discipline issues. The assigned to my caseload were students with disabilities and the school was required by law to provide education opportunities in the least restrict environment possible. Each student would come to an off-site location and receive one on one instruction for two hours per day.
There are slow learners as well as a mixture of fast learners in every classroom. These should be taken into consider and activities should be planned accordingly so that slow learners will not left behind and fast learners will not be bored. There are students with learning difficulties which will affect the teaching learning process. These should be taken into consider and teachers need to avoid things happening which as an effect in the teaching learning process. Behavior such as disruptive and destructive shows similar characteristics. These behaviors need to be discussed with the parents and necessary actions need to be taken to create a good atmosphere in the class. Also teachers will be able to identify different cognitive levels and learning styles. Some students learn through audio, some need to see visually while some of them learn by writing. So as teachers we need to have all these learning styles in a lesson to fulfill each individual. Planning should be done accurately which helps in the teaching learning process. Teachers play a great role in handling different children in the classroom. To build up an effective teaching process, these facts need to be taken into consideration. Teachers could think of different ways that they can implement in the classroom in the process of teaching and learning. Group method is one of the main teaching
