Strength A quote by Karen Salmansohn reads, “Strength grows in the moments when you think you can’t go on but you keep going anyway.” Many of us have faced some really tough times on the rollercoaster of life. I can safely say that I am not the only one that has felt like some days the world is just out to get me. In those days of struggle, we always find a way to get through to the next day and make it better than the last. This process is different for everyone because everyone develops and uses their strength in many different ways, but we all eventually find that better day, through strength. Oxford Dictionaries defines one meaning of strength as “the emotional or mental qualities necessary in dealing with difficult or distressing situations.” The word strength has a very abstract meaning and comes in different forms like physical and mental or spiritual strength, so my goal is to define strength by using examples of strength. Strength is the ability to resist being moved or broken by a force or the quality that allows someone to deal with problems in a determined and effective way. …show more content…
This makes it hard to fully grasp the full meaning, so before we get too far into things, here are some words with similar meaning to the word strength. Fortitude, resilience, spirit, backbone, strength of character, courage, bravery, pluck, pluckiness, courageousness, grit, mettle, informal guts, and spunk are some synonyms for strength. All of these words reflect back to the overall meaning of the mental or emotional qualities needed to overcome difficult or taxing situations. To further extend our understanding, I am going to provide a few examples that we can relate to to deeply define the word

...egories: physical, mental, and spiritual. Physical strength can be defined as; the quality of being physically strong, or capacity to sustain the application of force without yielding or breaking.” (Diaz 238). Reading this book brings about many different gestures of strength bringing about different emotions and showing that you can deal with heartache, pain, and every other emotion in various ways, but just like Cheryl Strayed said “Let yourself be gutted. Let it open you. Start here.”
Muscle endurance is the ability to perform a lot of repetitions against a given resistance for a long period of time. The combination of strength and endurance results in muscle endurance. Muscle endurance is used in may sports such as rowing, swimming, cycling, distance running, field hockey and American football. Normally, an endurance muscle program involves lifting about 12-25 repetitions of moderate loads. In some cases, this is inadequate for many sports such as boxing, canoeing and x-cross skiing.

The novel Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals has many themes that are shown. One of the major themes that stuck out to me was inner strength and perseverance. Inner strength means to have Integrity of character: resoluteness of will: mental resistance to doubt or discouragement. Perseverance means steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.
This strength, in particular, influenced my decision to pursue social work as a career because cases will often be complex and I know that changes do not occur overnight and positive results only occur within time. I mastered the strength of being patient because growing up with an older sibling often requires you to learn patience. One aspect I realized was I don’t get frustrated easily and that is because I can be a patient person. The second strength I possess is being empathetic for example when a friend or family member shares something that may not be going to good in their life I like to pretend I am in their shoes, I like to provide empowerment and also be relatable, often times when one of my friends is upset over a situation I tend to get upset as well. I like to look at events through a sociological lens so I can better understand the situation. The last strength I possess is dedication, I feel this will influence my decision to pursue social work because I put my heart and soul into every aspect of my life, for example, I am quite dedicated to my studies, in High School I worked extremely hard to make it into the top ten of my graduating class and by being dedicated to my school work I ended up being number five. I am an extremely dedicated person because I do not like to fail, and I’ll always give it my all until I can no longer do so, I believe I would be a good social worker because I’d be dedicated to my client trying my hardest to provide the best of the
My five strengths according to the strength finder include; balance, this helps me be aware of treating all people equally regardless of the situation. I am neither in anyone 's favor or against anyone as this to me is selfishness and individualism. This would result in a situation where some people scale heights due to connections while others are lagging behind. I believe that a consistent environment where the rules apply to everyone is the best for individuals to function best (Rath, 2007). Flexibility is my next strength. By knowing that things do not always work out as planned has helped me change the tactics of how I perform my tasks. I do not always expect to have a smooth flow of opportunities or accomplish goals, but
Strength is an abstract concept with various meanings. Some meanings are more complex than others. Many people when they hear the word strength think of muscular men who can lift cars or comic book heroes that fly around their city saving people. More exists to the concept than just being muscular. Strength is also shown when one goes through something tough but stays positive and pushes through it anyways. Having strength can mean possessing the ability to accomplish hard tasks because of muscles, being firm or solidly planted in something, or withstanding your own and not giving up or giving in to the opposing force.
Strength is having the courage to carry on during hard times. No matter what was happening in the lives of the characters they still kept going on throughout their lives. One example is when Big Mama died and she normally held the family together. The family had to continue their lives without her and this could have been hard for them to do.
What does strength mean? It means courage, being brave, being an individual, teamwork and having great willpower. When I say courage, I mean to over face your fears and becoming stronger and becoming brave. By being an individual it means that you stand up for what you think what's right or do something different from another group of people and sticking with your own thing, and having great willpower, is the ability to control yourself, strong determination that allows you to do something difficult.
In life there are many terms that are relative to individual cultures. That means that the definition is different depending on the culture's location and its persons believe. The definition for one such term, courage, as defined by both Daniel Webster and Funk & Wagnalls is "That quality of mind or spirit enabling one to meet danger or difficulties/ opposition with firmness/fearlessness." The words that make courage a relative term are danger and opposition.
Information When you think of a person who is physically fit you probably think of a sprinter, gymnast, weightlifter, football player, or basketball player. There is so much to physical fitness besides being one of those people. For decades, physiologist and fitness organizations have tried to come up with an answer and here it is. “Physical fitness- a measure of the body’s ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, resist hypokinetic disease (diseases from sedentary lifestyles), and to meet emergency situations .” Sometimes they add to the definition stating it is the ability to transmit genes to the next generation. Now, this is the short answer for what physical fitness it is much longer is and detailed
Someone once said “When life puts you in tough situations, don't say “why me?” say “try me”. Willpower means with strong determination. It is used as a noun in literature. Willpower also means with self-control, restraint, or self-discipline. The word willpower originated in the 1870’s, and is important because when one is in a tough situation strong determination is needed to get the task done. Without willpower one has nothing. One example of willpower is when someone is in a race and they really want to get 1st place. That person has to have strong determination to finish with the best time. Temple Grandin, The Clever Class, and Children of War are the three nonfiction literature examples that display the most willpower. Temple
For this assignment I decided to pick a top strength to further embrace and a lower strength to work on making better. My second highest ranking on the assessment and the strength I chose to further embrace was kindness and generosity. This character strength is characterized as being kind to others and happy to do favors for anyone even if you don’t know them well. The second strength I chose to focus on was my absolute bottom strength: Forgiveness and Mercy. This is characterized as not holding a grudge or seeking revenge but rather letting the feud settle and forgiveness and mercy overcome you. The week I spent working on these strengths had many ups and downs but I feel as though they ultimately came to a successful conclusion and a place where I can continue to grow from.
Everyone has their own definition of a strong person. A strong person to me is a person that can overcome the adversities in life positively. My friend Ivery, my dad, and my sister can be boldly described as a strong person in so many ways. In order to be characterized as a strong person you have to be stable-minded, courageous, and honest. Every strong person has their own character traits but there are some that stand out more than others. Some people may define people strong by their physical strengths. Others might say you are strong because you didn’t cry when you should have cried. Defining a strong person is based off of your perception of something. There are three people that demonstrate strong qualities as an individual.
