One of the biggest concepts of understanding one’s life experiences is the term sociological imagination. Defined as the ability to see and understand the how and the way of social forces. Often individual’s like myself and don’t realize how our lives are connected to the many different social changes that come along with society and history. Social changes are the transformations of culture and societies over time. Culture and society changes advances over time and we contribute to some of those changes. Throughout the generations things change, our lives are all through micro sociological and macro sociological changes. Micro levels are small-scale patterns of society, such as everyday social communication that we have with people, while macro levels are large-scale patterns of society. The large-scale interactions consist of church base faith or even your own culture, all in, which shape who you are. I never would have thought it played such a significant role in the way I go through life until now. There are so many numerous social forces that go so above this paper and the more society increases in population the more social forces will change, and like evolution my perspective on sociological imagination will change. Change in society is unpreventable, so I believe one won’t hold on to all views of society throughout the course of their life. Although, I have come to a conclusion that my life experiences aren’t just by fate but my behavior and the way I give thought to solutions goes back to the history of the way I was brought up, but also the history of the world as a whole. While sociological imagination has to do with social forces, I’m a firm believer that my life experiences are due to the fact that I don’t agree with most of society
What is sociological imagination? Our textbook describes sociological imagination as the ability to see our private experiences, personal difficulties, and achievements as, in part, a reflection of the structural arrangements of society and the times in which we live. The movie entitled Forrest Gump is a great example of sociological imagination. In this paper, I will cite examples from the movie and tell how they correlate with sociological imagination. Sociological imagination allows us examine the events of our lives and see how they intersect with the wider context of history and tradition of the society in which we live. Although with all this information of theories and theorists sociology is relatively explained as agreed philosophies that delivers a reason for human society. Sociological theories are like most other theories, they are selective, and there is no quantity of theory to explain everything or define the infinite amount of information that exist or comprehend the methods of observing reality. Sociological theories vary and can be linked to each other according to various criteria. The two main perspectives of sociology are the micro sociological approach and the macro sociological approach. The micro sociological approach is based more on the persons being capable of their own independent thoughts feelings and behaviour; therefor society is built through their interactions amongst each other and the significances they attach to them. This approach is defined using Social Action Theory and Symbolic Interactionism. The Macro Sociological approach is on a much bigger scale and consists of a person being born into a current society which will then shape their behaviour. It centres on the organisations, values and the culture of that particular society and how it impacts an individual and their role in life. This approach is made clearer using Functionalism, Feminist and Conflict Theories.
Sociology is the study of society and the interactions that occur within society itself. There are numerous methods of analyzing societies and the way the function, nonetheless, most methods fall in micro and macro level theories. Micro level theories allow sociologist to study smaller relationships such as individual or compact groups of people. On the other hand, macro level studies permit for larger scale investigations to take place. With both of these theories there are three theoretical perspectives used in sociology. In today’s society, it is easy to spot someone blaming themselves for the occurrence of their personal life problems. For example, a single-mother may blame herself for not being able to support her children well due to a shortage of money and unavailability to find a decent job. Another could be a newly wed couple having daily arguments that may lead to their divorce, or women who are facing difficulties perceiving their housekeeping responsibilities and wanting to become something more than just a homemaker. These various private tensions may seem very personal. These dilemmas are all related to a bigger world called society and this is known as the sociological imagination. Sociological imagination suggests that people look at their own personal troubles as social issues and, in general try to connect their own individual encounters with the workings of society. The personal problems are closely related to societal issues such as unemployment, marriage, war and even the city life where the private troubles and the public issues become clearly apparent. With the understanding of the sociological imagination, I began to notice the daily choices I make, the classes I attend, the way I was raised by my parents, the group of people I choose to hang out with, the things I like to converse about with others are all somehow affected by public issues and what society tends to make us believe is right. There are many areas in my life where I feel that I am greatly affected by various sociological theories such as events dealing with gender and sexuality, family and culture, ethnicity and race, and social class and work.
Throughout history people have used marijuana for its dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds to relieve pain, stress, and other medical issues from one’s life. Within the recent years it has become one of the most debated issues in the United States. In the 1930s, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Narcotics (now the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs) claimed that marijuana was a “gateway” drug and was a powerful, addicting substance. During the sixties marijuana became a symbol for rebellion against authority so it became very popular by college students and “hippies”. Sociology is a part of everyday life. People experience sociological changes when they get married, get a new job, or get discriminated against. All of these things can alter a person’s perspective on a group of people or even the world. Since the beginning of this class, I have personally endured several sociological changes in my life. I recently started a new job. I’m meeting new and wonderful people and I no longer dread having to go to work. I have also begun setting plans for my wedding to the one girl who I know will make everyday better than the one before. But, perhaps the one instance that has affected me the most and the deepest was when my parents got a divorce.
However it is best to first establish how sociology is misused when not imposed correctly. Berger criticizes the ordinary citizen who attempts to understand sociology by confusing it with fields of work that it can apply to. “Sociology is not a practice but an attempt to understand“; Berger elaborates this point by explaining why society must use the sociological perspective to correctly use their sociological knowledge. Mills has a similar contention with the misuse of sociology. The private orbs people find themselves stuck in remain intact unless they use their sociological imagination (Mills). Our sociological imaginations come from our ability to switch to and from differing social perspectives. If we are to practice sociology we must be able to envision how individual lives affect the world as a whole and vice versa. Anthony Giddens has described the individual who can embrace the sociological imagination as one who is able to “pull themselves away from the situation and to be able to think from an alternative point of view”. In other words, the ability to utilize sociological perspectives is a prerequisite for seeing the world through the sociological imagination. As I sketch my sociological portrait, I find myself first looking at the multiple statuses I hold in society and how each came about. I am not only a father to an young adult, but a son, a brother, a friend to many, a neighbor, a student once again and a blue-collar worker. Each of these statuses developed during various times in my life, and requires me to take on, at times, numerous roles. These statuses have defined who I have become and the impacts I have on society. My sociological portrait will be based on the social institution of family. My family has been the most influential in molding who I have become.

If everything in the world went the same every day, it would be boring. In this society there are two levels to sociology, which are microsociology and macrosociology. Before I started taking the course of sociology I wasn’t really expecting to learn anything, it was just supposed to be an easy online class. However, that was not the case. It challenged my mind. I started to see sociology all around me, starting with family, then friends, and how I see things overall in general. A better way of understanding ourselves. We use sociology in many ways every day. One central and important study of sociology is the study of everyday social life. Everyday life and sociology are definitely two different words and situations, but they tend to hold a close relationship. While sociology is the study of the human interaction, everyday life consists of everyday human interaction. Everyday life is filled by human beings interacting with one another, ideas, and emotions. Sociology studies the interactions with all of these and shows how mere interaction resulted in things such as ideas. For an example, race and ethnicity are important concepts in the field of sociology and are ones that are studied a great deal.
