The autobiography An American Life: Ronald Reagan, by Ronald Reagan tells the story of Reagan’s successes and early life experiences that ultimately led him to become President of the United States and leave such a lasting legacy. Through this, the reader is able to grasp his family’s reaction to the Depression and elements that influenced him to believe so strongly in traditional values and restoration of America. The memoir offers great insight in both public and personal experiences in not only childhood, but life as President and how he went about his many ventures in his personal life and ultimately politically. Born on February 6, 1911, Reagan was moved around to a few Illinois towns before officially settling in Dixon, Illinois. His life with his parents was what some would call difficult due to his father Jack’s alcoholism, but his mother never allowed Reagan to blame him and rather to deal with problems such as this with generosity and understanding. He brought back conservatism and acted on what the people actually wanted. He defended capitalism and inspired the people of America with his economic plan. Reagan is what America needs now, someone who truly talks to America with strength and does not let government get out of hand. His line "It is time to check and reverse the growth of government which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed,” highlights a problem today that we as Americans need to stand up to. In all, Reagan’s impact is one that cannot be compared. His relentlessness in pursuing traditional American values and leading the country with truth, prosperity, and freedom leads him to be on of the saviors of America and his teachings should be brought to this country today and in the future.
