Huckleberry Finn is a young boy searching for an adventure, and a better life. When he lived with his father, he was being abused. One day his father just ran off. He tended to talk himself into believing that things would be alright even if that weren’t completely true. Always saying that he would do something and even if he did not do it he felt better because he said it. Finn encountered many events, one of them was meeting a boy named Buck, but not all of Finn’s encounters were good, like running into the men on the boat, and Tom Sawyer getting shot. He learned that giving someone your word goes a long way in friendships. “Huck has internalized his society’s racial prejudice yet is able, at times, to rise above it.” (Mintz, Steven). When Jim was captured by Aunt Sally, Finn attempted to rescue him. Finn approached Aunt Sally who had believed that Finn was her nephew Tom Sawyer and began living with he until he could figure out how to set Jim free. Later, Tom Sawyer ran into Finn realizing that he was pretending to be him and wanted to help set Jim free as well. Sawyer told Aunt Sally that he was Sid. On their way to rescuing Jim, Sawyer was shot by the men chasing after them. Instead of Jim continuing his path to freedom he decided that saving the life of Sawyer was more important than his freedom. When Finn internalized the selfless act of Jim he realized that not all blacks were bad. Jim helped Finn get Sawyer to a doctor, but Finn ended up getting caught by one of Aunt Sally’s men and was taken back to her house. When the doctor came to see Sawyer he need help and instead of Jim hiding out he helped and in the end was held captive again. When Sawyer finally woke up he and Finn were busted for their swapping of names and with helping a slave escape, but just when they were about to have it handed to them by Aunt Sally, Aunt Polly came in and said that Jim has been a free man for over two months. Miss Watson had died and in her will she said she would set Jim
