I don’t think professionalism is a difficult thing to define, yet it means something different for everyone. There are a few expectancies that come with the expectation of professionalism itself that are pretty much universal. These expectations are along the lines of; be on time, be courteous, don’t make a fool of yourself or others, be the representative of yourself and those you work for that you can, and other sort of “common sense” rules. So in the smallest nutshell, professionalism is remembering and respecting the expectation set of you to be courteous. So that’s pretty much the basics of acting like a professional, so what other rules could professionalism entail? Well this varies on a case-by-case basis. For example, you might have a higher set of expectations in being a professional acting lawyer than the expectations and standards set for someone starting their first job as a dishwasher. Success has very different meanings to each and every single individual. Yet your professionalism will play a vital part in it no matter what you consider to be success. A large part of professionalism I did not discuss previously is consistency. Some may think “Ah well what if I consider success to be painting in my room, alone, all hours of the day, and then selling those paintings online so I can make enough to never have to interact with another person?” Well sure, if that really is what you want. But you still need to follow the steps of professionalism to reach that goal. If you’re selling something, you need a targeted audience.
