Human trafficking comes in various different forms; anywhere from sexual trafficking, child trafficking, slavery, and trafficking organs that were donated by force. Human trafficking “is a multi-billion-dollar business, often part of international organized crime outfits,” (“Sex Trafficking”). This was an accepted practice in ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt where it was acceptable to have slaves (“Sex Trafficking”). Some countries have become dependent on human trafficking to meet their demands, but should people be put at risk so others can fulfill their needs?
Countries around the world have been practicing this business for decades, there are various reasons to why they depend on such a cruel practice. “Poverty and famine are two of the main drivers of human trafficking,” (“Human Trafficking”) also including globalization, “political instability, cultural mores, and a demand for sex workers” (Sex Trafficking”). Men, women, and children can all be victims of this heinous crime. Children are often kidnapped, or the parents will “sell their children to traffickers because they cannot afford to take care of them,” (“Human Trafficking”). “Trafficked people in a variety of situations can also be used as a source of organs,” (“Human Trafficking). “In impoverished nations crime networks solicit kidneys, livers, and other organs, which are trafficked to surgeons, organ banks, and hospitals,” (“Human Trafficking”). Often, the trafficker will trick the donor into thinking their organ is failing or he/she has a disease and will remove the organ without the donor knowing. Slavery is also a major form of human trafficking, most of the victims are either refugees seeking help or aid, or displaced individuals (“Human Trafficking”).
