Introduction: What is Holistic Therapy? Holistic therapy is based largely on psychosynthesis, a therapeutic technique that views and treats the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual person as a whole. Those who practice holistic therapy believe that while taking care of our physical bodies is an important component of maintaining health, we must not neglect the other levels. Good health is more than the absence of physical pain or disease. This technique also differs from more traditional psychotherapy in the methods used to approach and treat psychological and emotional distress. While traditional therapies and conventional medicine often focuses only on the present behaviors and thoughts that accompany a specific issue, or seek to use a more temporary, “band-aid fix” approach, holistic therapy approaches healing and promotes change from all aspects of being. Holistic technique addresses the imbalances occurring on all levels, not just a specific few. Mind, body, and soul are all equally working parts of the greater system of a whole human being. The balance and alignment of a person’s mind, body, and soul becomes a life-long process, and promises a healthier and happier life. Using a holistic approach, great attention is paid to the unique relationship that people have with their world, and further, how that relationship is expressed through thoughts, feelings, and state of being. Because of this multidimensional approach, positive change is occurring on all levels, resulting in a more long-term and often more effective healing process. Healing and rebalancing are one and the same. Conclusion The concepts behind holistic therapy have existed for thousands of years. However, holistic techniques have only recently begun to be integrated into the mental and physical healthcare mainstream. Many healthcare practitioners are doubtful and slow to accept these “old-new” ways of treatment and thinking. For so long the fields have clung to the idea that the spiritual and emotional aspects of a person are in no way attached to the physical. Holistic thinking takes that notion and drastically turns it on its head. The importance of doing research and keeping an open mind cannot be stressed enough when it comes to matters of personal health. A person’s ability to appreciate aspects of and potentially learn from the holistic approach can drastically enhance health, well-being and over-all quality of life.
