“April third has been declared by Feminist and labor groups as ‘Equal Pay Day’ because it supposedly takes 93 calendar days for women’s wages to catch up to men’s.” 3 Many people believe that sex discrimination is the main reason for the pay gap. However, several factors must be taken into consideration. On average, women earn 74 cents for each dollar earned by the male population. This number is calculated by comparing median annual earnings of men and women. But several other differences between the sexes make up for the variation in pay.
When there is an unfair pay scale between two groups, in this case women and men, it's called a wage gap. This isn’t just a recent injustice, but something that’s been going since women started working “men’s jobs.” Although there have been many laws and acts that have tried to stop the gender wage gap, this is still a problem today with many professions. As a woman myself, these statistics are quite frightening considering professionals predict the gap won’t close until 2059. It also makes me very angry that I could be working the same job and as man and be paid less than him. Think about the message this sends to young boys and men; that men are better than women at everything, men will always be paid more, and that men will always be superior.
Many women decide not to study to become engineers as result women are not as prominent in the technology workplace. Technology companies have problems with gender. In addition, women are paid less than men for the same type of work. According to Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg mentions that women were paid fifty-nine cents for every dollar men were paid in 1996, but women protested to raise the compensation to seventy-seven cents (6). This means that even though a woman and a man perform the same work such as an engineer does, both do the same assignments and have the same responsibilities in the technology place, men are paid twenty three cents more than women.
There has always been a gender inequality issue in most jobs in the work force, but many may not see this inequality in the nursing field because they do not pay attention to it fully. Many people still have the stereotype that women are the only ones in this job field, but this is not the case anymore. This job field is always in demand for new nurses, and many women and men choose this field to the high pay and the satisfaction of helping others. This job field is one of the more female dominated careers. In 2013 only 10 percent of the population of nurses were men (Tanner, L. 2015).
Women are one of the groups being discriminated against today. They try very hard to fit in and be successful in their careers. In Audre Lorde article on human differences, Age, class, sex and race, she also saw human difference could result as difference in sex. In this research, I was able to determine discernment against women is found in many workplaces. Some managers try to fix this problem, but others just ignore it.
Gender discrimination has long been a topic of discussion in regards to the workplace. With women claiming that they are being offered salaries and benefits less than that offered to their male counterparts, it's no wonder there has been a consistent fight for equality between genders. The apparent discrimination extends not just to companies with traditional hierarchies but also in the service industry where it is believed that your wages are earned based upon your merit. “The latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the largest gaps in wages between men and women are in sales. In insurance, for example, saleswomen make only 62.5% of what their male colleagues earn, in retail just 64.3%, and in real estate only 66%.
Although women have been active members of the workforce for almost 70 years now, there is still a bias against women working. In the United States, there is still an economic bias against women throughout the stages of hiring, payment, and stereotypical jobs. Women should be able to be hired for the same jobs as men, be paid the same, understand that they can choose their jobs, and pay the same amount of money as men do for similar products. According to federal law (Gender Discriminations Law & Legal Definition), “Gender discrimination, also known as sexual discrimination, is any action that specifically denies opportunities, privileges, or rewards to a person (or a group) because of gender.” This means that if an employer gives something

SEXISM IN THE WORKFORCE Sexism has been around for a long time and it’s still going on today. You see sexism in almost anything, where they get treated unfairly or being degraded by a man or society. One of the biggest places that affects woman in sexism would be in the work force. Woman have been portrayed as inferior inside and outside the house hold. The work force is defined by social structures from patriarchal perspectives.
The job market for men and women is still unfair but it is starting to get equal. Another large sexist factor in the workforce, is that women get paid less than men do for the same exact job. “Women get paid 77 cents on the dollar for every dollar a man makes, according to a recent study from the Institute for Women's Policy Research. That's a difference of more than $10,000 per year on average,”(Berman). Why is this?
