Family involvement is critical in the educational development of a child, therefore, it is my responsibility as an educator to help families be proactive in their children’s pedagogy. A student’s learning is dependent upon many influences and a crucial factor is family involvement. Families rely upon the teacher to create a welcoming atmosphere which allows for all parties involved to work as one unit in the proliferation of knowledge. This may be accomplished by encouraging families to volunteer in the classroom, attend school functions, commit to regular parent-teacher conferences and create engaging at-home family activities. The contrived notion of a traditional family does not exist, therefore, I must always be mindful that families come in many forms. It is my job to embrace all families and make all possible efforts to gain insight into individual definitions of family. This may include taking the time to learn about the customs of a family transplanted from another country. What I deem welcoming, may be misinterpreted as being rude, thus, creating an awkwardness; weakening our partnership. Conversely, it may be necessary to seek out peers who speak their native tongue, if language is a barrier. It may prove prudent to utilize online services to gain a greater acumen of a student’s heritage or socio-economic background for enhanced understanding. As I mentioned previously, seeking support groups within the community which mirror a student’s home life will serve the student and provide me with an opportunity to gain knowledge. I, as the teacher, will be a lifelong learner. Furthermore, my having information about different types of family units readily available within the classroom family resource center will demonstrate my commitment to diversity. Conversely, all families will come to value each and be able to provide assistance to one another. It strengthens, not only the classroom family, but the community as well. Of great importance to me, is honoring diversity and I would like diversity to be celebrated annually by having a Family Diversity
