Computer Science is not just a four-credit class that students can take at St. Mary’s to fulfill their math credit for the core requirements; it is the scientific and practical approach to computation and its applications (“Computer Science”, 2015). Most think that computer science is just about learning the basics of computers, such as learning to use word processors, navigating the Internet, or how to download certain programs. This is a very common misconception. Computer science is however involved with developing these programs to make the lives of computer uses much easier. Computer science is not just associated strictly with computers either. On a larger scale, it involves the manipulation of ideas and mechanisms to make computation easier for mankind. For example, dating back to 2800 BC, the first abacus was being utilized to make basic arithmetic easier for the common man (Jamieson, 2). Instead of …show more content…
After learning of them in the computer science class, I found it fascinating how the average person consistently misses such a commonly used practice. Everyone uses this idea and yet they have no clue what it is, or that they are even using it. This is partly why I am so interested in Computer Science. I want to be able to create more complex algorithms to use in programs that people use and although they more than likely will have no clue what they are actually using. I use computers on a daily basis as it is, and think it would be extremely fulfilling to create something that people whom also use computers and other similar technology on a daily basis will be able to use either for their convenience or entertainment. Introductory Computer Science will be a preview of whether I want to continue into the Computer Science field or not. I have no idea whether I will like the grind that is programming, or whether I will do well at it. I am taking this class to find
“My little princess is growing up” said my mother with a smile after she dropped me off to my next journey to New York City. Sauntering along the streets of the “Big Apple” and learning computer science at Girls Who Code was a dream come true. I never imagined my parents letting me go to New York City alone. Walking on the busy streets alongside thousands of people was worth gaining exposure to computer science.

In terms of teaching, our undergraduate and graduate curriculum provides a timely and well-rounded view of the field, with special emphasis on the practical aspects of building useful software. Our strengths lie in the traditional mainstream of areas of computer science: algorithms, programming languages, operating systems, distributed computing, networks, databases and theory of computing. We also offer courses in some subfields: graphics, artificial intelligence and the software aspects of computer architecture. The department's programs prepare students for positions in the design and development of computer systems and applications, in business and industry, and for scientific positions in industrial or academic computing research.
Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg. These three men all have one thing in common, they became very wealthy from investing in the future of computers. A person may decide to go to college and make a career out of working with computers because of the potential earnings and consistent need of individuals who have studied computer sciences. This paper is going to inform you on what an individual does with a Computer Science degree, education needed to work in this field, and why we need people to do this kind of work.
Computer Science is the study of information and how that information is represented, stored, and manipulated for other purposes. Consider how a personal computer uses an operating system to store, access, and run other programs to view, manipulate, replicate, and share information. That is what computer science is, essentially, it is the backbone of all that is computing.
Occupations in the field of computer science are considered to be “male” jobs. Women are increasingly less likely to enter the field than in years past. However, two of the first people that we were introduced to in our textbook as key people in the history of Computer Science are Ada Augusta and Grace Murray Hopper. The page limits of this paper do not allow the author to adequately describe all of the contributions that Grace made to Computer Science. Instead, you will be introduced to Grace Hopper and how her pioneering work on the Mark I continue to influence women and the world of computer science.
Computers and mobile devices have become an integral part of today’s society. Therefore, many people use them in schools, homes, and the work place. It has become imperative to know the basic computer skills to survive. College students acquire basic computer skills that will equip them with the knowledge to operate a computer, such as sending emails, conducting internet research, creating a word document and creating presentations. Students at Chattahoochee Technical College are required to have basic computer skills to accomplish tasks.
There are many different beginnings to the origins of computers. Their origins could be dated back more than two thousand years ago, depending on what a person means when they ask where the first computer came from. Most primitive computers were created for the purpose of running simple programs at best. (Daves Old Computers) However, the first ‘digital’ computer was created for the purposes of binary arithmetic, otherwise known as simple math. It was also created for regenerative memory, parallel processing, and separation of memory and computing functions. Built by John Vincent Atanasoff and Clifford Berry during 1937-1942, it was dubbed the Atanasoff Berry Computer (ABC).
An online computer science degree is one of the red-hot educational commodities in recent years. Computer science degree comprises many sub-disciplines and degree from associates in computer science degree to an engineering degree in computer science degree. With the advent of online degree programs, more and more potential students are able to take advantage of the growing job market for computer science degree graduates.
I took up Computer Science and Engineering as my discipline in Bhoj Reddy Engineering College for Women affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, one of the premier institutes in India. My undergraduate education has been a great learning and enriching process for me. It exposed me to all the core areas of Computer Science like operating systems, database management systems, networks and network security, data structures, algorithms and software engineering. These courses have given me a good foundation in the core concepts. My interest lies in Database Management, Programming Languages, Theory of Computation, and Software Engineering. I am fully acquainted with the fast growing subjects like Object Oriented Programming, Analysis and Design. On the other hand, the intensive laboratory classes exposed me to a fascinating world of experimentation. It was here that I discovered the qualities of perseverance and diligence in myself. I feel that these courses have done a lot to prepare me for my future studies and research work.
The fist computer, known as the abacus, was made of wood and parallel wires on which beads were strung. Arithmetic operations were performed when the beads were moved along the wire according to “programming” rules that had to be memorized by the user (Soma, 14). The second earliest computer, invented by Blaise Pascal in 1694, was a “digital calculating machine.” Pascal designed this first known digital computer to help his father, who was a tax collector. Pascal’s computer could only add numbers, and they had to be entered by turning dials (Soma, 32). It required a manual process like its ancestor, the abacus. Automation was introduced in the early 1800’s by a mathematics professor named Charles Babbage. He created an automatic calculation machine that was steam powered and stored up to 1000 50-digit numbers. Unlike its two earliest ancestors, Babbage’s invention was able to perform various operations. It relied on cards with holes punched in them, which are called “punch cards.” These cards carried out the programming and storing operations for the machine. Unluckily, Babbage’s creation flopped due to the lack of mechanical precision and the lack of demand for the product (Soma, 46). The machine could not operate efficiently because technology was t adequate to make the machine operate efficiently Computer interest dwindled for many years, and it wasn’t until the mid-1800’s that people became interested in them once again.
My interest in Computers dates back to early days of my high school. The field of CS has always fascinated me. The reason for choosing CS stream was not a hasty decision. My interest started developing in the early stage of my life, when I studied about the invention of computers. The transformation from the large size to small palmtops enticed me to know about the factors responsible for making computers, also the electronic gadgets so small. I was quite impressed after seeing a small chip for the first time in my school days, especially after I learnt that it contained more than 1000 transistors, “integrated circuits”.
The history of computers is an amazing story filled with interesting statistics. “The first computer was invented by a man named Konrad Zuse. He was a German construction engineer, and he used the machine mainly for mathematic calculations and repetition” (Bellis, Inventors of Modern Computer). The invention shocked the world; it inspired people to start the development of computers. Soon after,
Choosing a career is very important in a person’s life. Over the past two decades, many professions have change significantly with the influx of technological developments. One needs to think about the things that interest them and what kind of lifestyle they want to have. Some things a person should think about are what qualifications are needed, what type of training is necessary, and the future need of the career they choose. Some other things to consider would be how much money they will make, what is the probability of advancement, and does the career satisfy their need for an enjoyable life.
Computer technology not only has solved problems but also has created some, including a certain amount of culture shock as individuals attempt to deal with the new technology. A major role of computer science has been to alleviate such problems, mainly by making computer systems cheaper, faster, more reliable, easier to use.
