There are chances you may have heard this while growing up: go to college, get a job and you’d be successful. This may be what you've been made to believe. And your brain has been conditioned that way. But in reality, it's not true! There are no guarantees in life. What would work for X may not work for Y. That said, a college degree is not irrelevant, either. College education broadens your knowledge, serves as a buffer zone and gives you unquestioned advantage. Furthermore, it provides you with valuable skills and training aside attending classes, performing experiments, writing exams and essays, to name a few. For me, having a college degree and getting a well-paid job may be it. For you, however, a college degree may be too expensive or not suitable. You may prefer using your creativity and hands while creating value and wealth. For example, would anyone say Steve Jobs was unsuccessful? I doubt! He never graduated from college, but was able to build a multi-billion dollar company. Today, most of the smartphones, tablets and computers are the product of his creativity and innovation. Such specialized field of study requires a high level of training found only in colleges. And it’s indispensable, especially as it involves some sort-of license to ascertain your competency. Let’s look at another example. Some the best writers the world has ever seen never studied creative writing in college. They were self-taught individuals. Writers like Ray Bradbury, Maya Angelou, Mark Twain, and Charles Dickens, to name a few. These are people we celebrate daily. They were very successful with their writing despite having no college degree. On the contrary, there are those who studied creative writing, but were never successful writers. Also, writing essays in college doesn't guarantee you'll be a great writer. Some people only write them to earn grades. And after college, they dump writing. However, there are successful writers like Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Wole Soyinka, who graduated from college and were very successful with their writing, too.
