Our family Christmas Eve was spent at the church service which lasts until midnight. Afterwards, we lit some fireworks and we placed a variety of candles all around the house to represent that Jesus is the Light of the world. On Christmas Day, all of our family get together; we play some games. We eat the special meal which my grandmother and my mum have prepared for days. Later on, my grandparents tell different exciting stories about their own experiences in childhood.
On Halloween night, children walk through neighborhoods seeking candy from strangers. While on Christmas Day, children open presents from people who love them and conclude the day with eating a massive dinner made by their families. Conversely, the tie between these holidays that makes them similar is the idea of celebrating by being gifted something by either family or strangers. Also, both holidays are similar by the unhealthy food consumed during their time of celebration. Halloween welcomes cavities from all the candy received and only weeks later, there is the typical family dinner to celebrate Christmas filled with fattening comfort food.
Then, at the sight of the first star in the sky on Christmas Eve, a 12-course supper begins, with one course for each of Jesus’ 12 disciples. The meal includes , or beet soup; stuffed cabbage; and kutiya, a dish of whole wheat grains soaked in water for hours and seasoned with honey, nuts, and crushed poppy seeds. Last Saturday December 19, 2015, Genius English Proficiency Academy had their Christmas Party. But one week before the party staffs and teachers are giving gifts for each of their Manito/Manita something soft, hard, long and sweet. Until the Christmas party day came. Most businesses, for now, celebrate Christmas every year buy closing for one or more days to allow staff members to spend time with their families. Families who live a fair distance from loved ones or friends often take this time of the year to extend their time away from work and travel across the county and throughout the world. Regardless if you are celebrating Christmas as a remembrance of Jesus Christ and his birth, a national holiday in which your office is closed, as an opportunity to spend time with your family, or purely for the joy of giving and or receiving gifts, this holiday is a major part of the United States and several other countries around the world.
Christmas Eve celebration are different for everyone. For example, the Mexican family “would eat tamales, enchiladas, sopapillas, and pozole” (McKay 1), Mary Devitt’s family has “the turkey dressing was the same every year” (Tapper 1), or pre-Christmas by Jere Armen is “celebration with food and presents” (1). My family’s Catholic Vietnamese celebrates the Christmas with many activities. In order to increase the Christmas in the air, my father and I decorate the Christmas tree together and put it in the living room. The tree is more brilliant when my father hangs colorful LED lights on the tree.
But I also remember how I loved it too much. There was turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, you name it (its funny how I only eat that type of meal once a year on Thanksgiving, while most of my friends have it on Christmas and Easter as well). After dinner, my family went to a party with all the Inns guests, and I made sure I was the first to sit on Santas lap when it was time to read The Night Before Christmas. A tall, blond-haired man who looked like my elementary school principal read the story out loud and I spent my time listening attentively.
My cousins from Nebraska always open their presents on Christmas eve because the next day they are traveling to my grandma and grandpa’s house. That night I would text my cousin to see if he got the newest Call of Duty game so we are able to play it when we see each other at our grandparents house. On Christmas eve my family would get all of our stuff lined up so when we want to leave the next day we can. I always pack my playstation three fir...
My parents always managed to make Christmas a special day for us, no matter how much money they had. We were raised to be thankful for the little things about the day, like being all together, and not just the gifts. Everyone has their own traditions for Christmas, some people open gifts the night before, some people go to bed early and wake up in the middle of the night to open presents. But, my family isn’t like every other family, my family has the reindeer dance. Every year my mom makes the best prime rib dinner.
Every year, my parents add a little more to the outside decorations. My mom, sisters, our children and myself decorate the inside of the house. My mom has so many indoor decorations that they can not all possibly be displayed. We try to change the decorations, which we put out every year. The men finish up just about the same time as, we women and then it is time to decorate the tree together.
