What is anthropology? When I was signing up for classes that is what I wondered myself. It is not an easy subject to fully understand for me at the least. It is all confusing to me. I feel like it can be hard to study a human when obviously you are a human yourself, I am sure it is easy to miss important and helpful information that would clarify research of humans. It is the research of humanity from its evolutionary origins to today’s cultural diversity. It is not only studying the past but the present of human kind. History to the coming up of the four sub disciplines that goes back to the 19th century. The early Americans were a huge part of the origin of anthropology. This is because the early American were interested in the origin and diversity of the Native Americans. Another reason why anthropology was broken up into four disciplines is because of human interest was the relationship of biology, which includes race, and culture. Not only there are historical reasons why it is broken up, but also there are logical reasons. In each sub-discipline considers time and space, if it is in a different geographic areas. This documentary film is about a scientist named Mark Plotkinraces against time to save the ancient healing knowledge of Indian tribes from extinction. These Indian tribes had very interesting ways to survive. I know myself as a person living in the United States living in a nice apartment and having medicines right at hand, these people are truly amazing. They have figured out what plants can do in medicine. Now, it is used in our modern medicine, and these Indian tribes are learning more and more what certain plants and mixture can do. For an example they even use multiple plants to produce insulin by hand for diabetes. This scientist is putting himself in their lives to learn their way of life, their culture, their society. This would be an example in the anthropology subfield for cultural anthropology. Scientists Mark Plotkinraces in my opinion would be considered an ethnographer. He uses the scientific method for his findings.
