This week at my internship I joined a majority of the staff attending a training called Bridges Out of Poverty and Effectively Living and Working within a Diverse World. The training also had an emphasis on ending sexual and domestic violence. It was a great training that lasted two days and was presented by Jodi Pfarr of Minneapolis, MN. She was an excellent speaker who held my attention the whole time. She also had the participants split into groups and discuss, which allowed me to hear about real-life experiences and hear from people of other counties. In evaluating myself this week, I would say that I did well. I was on time for the meetings and presented myself in a professional manner. One of these roles is to be a facilitator, or to be involved in gathering groups of people together for a variety of purposes including community development, self advocacy, political organization, and policy change. Social workers are involved as group therapists and task group leaders. Second example of relating classroom material is are discussion on diversity. I am not even going to list the class that bring up diversity because then I would list every single social work and psychology class I have ever taken in the social work program. Every class brings it up because it is extremely important to take diversity into account when working in this profession with clients. The whole second day of training was dedicated to learning about diversity. We created a chart with triangles and each had a triangle pair, one facing up and one facing down. The one facing up we put the “normalized” classification in that triangle and the “non-normal” in the other triangle facing down. For example, white, male, heterosexual, middle class and up, and so on were in the triangles facing up, while all other races, female, LGBT, lower class, and so on were in the triangle facing down.
