Nursing is a career with vast opportunities, there are several different positions and plenty of growing opportunities. One of the concerns within the healthcare field over the past years has been the shortage of nurses, which means that there are also lots of job opportunities for those interested in nursing. However, there also needs to be a certain amount of reflection on the workplace atmosphere present on many units that are looking to hire new grads from nursing school. One of the most important principles for a new nurse is to develop the adherence to patient safety and advocating for the patient. Shawna appears concerned for her patients, realizing how the current unit staff do not seem to care for their patients’ safety as she does. She is also concerned because the staff and herself seem to be overworked and understaffed. She does indeed have a right to be concerned, since “Workload can be a factor contributing to errors” (Carayon & Gurses, 2008). One thing she might consider is seek help by taking her concerns to the hospital’s director for patient safety. When the director hears out Shawna’s concerns one of the most important things would be to recognize the difficulty of this situation and acknowledge that this is not the experience or circumstances the hospital would hope to welcome Shawna into as a new employee. It would also be important for the patient safety director to recognize and remind Shawna that these are not problems that can be fixed overnight. In fact many of them do not have easy solutions. However, it would also be important to address Shawna’s continued training as a new nurse. One of the most effective ways to bring about change for this unit is to find appropriate leadership for the circumstances it is in. Because of the poor morale on the unit it would be helpful to search for a leader that would demonstrate a charismatic leadership style. The unit members need a leader who can motivate and involve them in patient care again. “Charismatic leaders inspire eagerness in their teams and are energetic in motivating employees to move forward” (BLAH BLAH). Another beneficial leadership style that should be looked for to help this unit is a democratic leader. Whenever a new leader is brought into a situation there is some resistance to this change. This unit needs a leader who will provide strong direction, but who can also include the members and make them feel a part of a team. A registered nurse (RN) is someone that went through a university or college and studied nursing; and then passed the national licensing exam to obtain a license to practice nursing. The degree earned by an RN at the need of the program is deemed a professional nursing degree. The RN top nursing staff and they usually works independently. On the hand, an LPN only earns a practical nursing degree after completion of the program. LPNs are mostly recognized only in USA and Canada; they are also named as License Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the state of California and Texas. LPN work under the supervisor of an RN or a physician.
I presume the role transition from academic nursing student to Graduate Nurse will be challenging and rewarding. In their findings, the researchers Doody, Tuohy & Deasy (2012) stated that for a successful transition NGNs need to be competent in a range of domains: interpersonal skills, managing workloads, providing health information, communication, and prioritising care delivery. Although I believe I am competent in the above specified areas, I am still not confident that I would get sufficient support in the hospital environment in terms of knowledge sharing, moral support and being given constructive feedback. Constructive criticism increases confidence in the work role and reduces stress in an individual (Doody, Tuohy & Deasy, 2012). In my previous professional placements I have been able to demonstrate my competency to work in the healthcare environment. I have received positive feedback from placement educators, buddy nurses and patients. Despite being competent in a range of the above areas NGNs may still face transition shock.

“We can’t turn away from a patient’s pain just because it’s difficult” (chapman, 2015, p. 88). I know the path of least resistance is taking a path of ignorance. Easy, is to ignore or neglect the true pain patients experience in times of crisis. As caregivers I believe we all want to heal others or we wouldn’t be in the field of nursing, but there are only handfuls willing to be present during the healing process because sharing one’s pain hurts. As a surgical nurse, I find being genuinely present takes hard work on my behalf, not only mentally but emotionally. On a unit where patient’s needs and conditions are changing at astonishing rates, being present requires mental strength in order slow down enough to recognize the value presence
There are many who believe that the next shortage will be worse and the demand for nurses will increase. There will be more jobs available especially with the baby boomer nurses retiring. Wood believes that when nurses retire, the next shortage could be even worse than the previous shortage. According to Wood this would lead to an “intellectual drain of institutional and professional nursing knowledge” (Wood, 2011, para 15). It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential.
