Nursing is a career with vast opportunities, there are several different positions and plenty of growing opportunities. One of the concerns within the healthcare field over the past years has been the shortage of nurses, which means that there are also lots of job opportunities for those interested in nursing. However, there also needs to be a certain amount of reflection on the workplace atmosphere present on many units that are looking to hire new grads from nursing school. One of the most important elements to evaluate for any unit is the leadership on the unit and in the hospital. One of the most important principles for a new nurse is to develop the adherence to patient safety and advocating for the patient. Shawna appears concerned for her patients, realizing how the current unit staff do not seem to care for their patients’ safety as she does. She is also concerned because the staff and herself seem to be overworked and understaffed. She does indeed have a right to be concerned, since “Workload can be a factor contributing to errors” (Carayon & Gurses, 2008). One thing she might consider is seek help by taking her concerns to the hospital’s director for patient safety. When the director hears out Shawna’s concerns one of the most important things would be to recognize the difficulty of this situation and acknowledge that this is not the experience or circumstances the hospital would hope to welcome Shawna into as a new employee. It would also be important for the patient safety director to recognize and remind Shawna that these are not problems that can be fixed overnight. In fact many of them do not have easy solutions. However, it would also be important to address Shawna’s continued training as a new nurse. One of the most effective ways to bring about change for this unit is to find appropriate leadership for the circumstances it is in. Because of the poor morale on the unit it would be helpful to search for a leader that would demonstrate a charismatic leadership style. The unit members need a leader who can motivate and involve them in patient care again. “Charismatic leaders inspire eagerness in their teams and are energetic in motivating employees to move forward” (BLAH BLAH). Another beneficial leadership style that should be looked for to help this unit is a democratic leader. Whenever a new leader is brought into a situation there is some resistance to this change. This unit needs a leader who will provide strong direction, but who can also include the members and make them feel a part of a team. When working with a democratic style leader, “Team members tend to have high job satisfaction and are productive because they are more involved” (BLAH
