September 11, 2001, began as just another Tuesday morning at Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. A line of 81 passengers filed through the security checkpoint, ready to board American Airlines Flight 11 bound for Los Angeles. They passed through metal detectors and x-ray machines, specially designed to find weapons and other dangerous objects in pockets or luggage. The supervisors found nothing suspicious. Not very far away at the same airport, another group of travelers were in the process of being cleared to board United Airlines Flight 175, also bound for Los Angeles. Thirty-seven passengers checked in for United Airlines Flight 93 bound for San Francisco, and they went quietly through security. Once again, nothing seemed suspicious.
Soon after American Airlines Flight 11’s takeoff, five hijackers stood up from their seats and stabbed two flight attendants with knives that managed to get past security. Some hijackers herded passengers to the rear of the aircraft, while others took over the controls. Under the control of the hijackers, the aircraft veered off course and started to head south.
Flight attendant Amy Sweeney called up the control office in Boston and began to give a report of the terrifying scene. At 8:44 A.M., she said, “Something is wrong. We are in a rapid descent. We are all over the place. We are flying very, very low. We are flying way too low. Oh my God we are way too low!” At 8:46 A.M., American Airlines Flight 11 smashed into the North Twin Tower in New York City. Everyone on board was killed instantly.
Meanwhile, United Airlines Flight 175 was also being taken over by hijackers who shouted that they had a bomb. The had veered it off course and were heading in the direction of Washington D.C. Several people on the ground near the pentagon saw the approaching aircraft, traveling much too low and very fast. Afework Hagos was stuck in a traffic jam on Columbia Pike. He heard an extremely loud noise and immediately got out of his car just as the plane passed over his head. The giant aircraft was flying so low that it was knocking down some streetlights. At 9:37 A.M., all 64 passengers and crew members were instantly killed, as well as the 125 workers inside the Pentagon.
So far, every hijacking had gone to the plan of the hijackers, but United Airlines Flight 93 turned out to be different. Suddenly, the airplane changed course and headed in the direction of Washington D.C. Several passengers called friends, family, and loved ones. Mark Bingham left a brief message to his mother, “This is Mark Bingham. I love you.”
By speaking to people on the ground, the passengers learned about the attacks on the Twin Towers. It was clear to them that they were going to die, but before they did they agreed to try and overpower the hijackers. It soon escalated into a
