Introduction: This paper is about what ethics means to me personally and my opinions on different ethical situations. I will be giving examples of my personal experiences on the following aspects. Personal: From my personal point of view, ethics is the belief in your mind that determines whether or not the subject of matter or action is right or wrong. Thus, ethics controls one’s behavior and how one acts in different situations. Different people may have different views on ethics, and it is usually affected by a person’s background, culture, home country, social norms, etc. For me, I think the major part of my ethical views is originated from parenting and education. No one, even laws and regulations, in the world can draw a perfect line on what is right and wrong. Laws in the United States are different from laws in other countries. A good example is that China is notorious for its dog-eating culture. Dog-eating is strictly prohibited by laws in America whereas it is absolutely acceptable in China. People in China think dogs are the same as other animals, like chicken and cows which can be eaten. In contrast, pet culture is well-known in western countries, and we think dogs are adorable so they have to be protected. Hong Kong, as an independent part of China, does not support but strongly discourage the dog-eating culture. Yet, if you think deeply, you cannot say the Chinese is wrong for its dog-eating behavior because they have been instilled a mindset that eating dogs are okay since they were little, and it has been their traditions for years. I had a time that my grandfather from China invited me to a Chinese banquet where dog meat would be served. I rejected his offer because I knew it was wrong for me to eat dogs. Nevertheless, I did not blame my grandfather for eating dogs since I understood that it is a tradition for him, and it is totally acceptable in his eyes. Other than that, China is also notorious for counterfeit and low-quality goods. I think the educational system, social norms, as well as political culture are the main causes for the lack of ethics in China. The Chinese curriculum primarily emphasizes on academic and scientific study. It does not cover a lot on morality. Furthermore, bribery has been a norm in China for centuries. Although there are laws banning the production of counterfeit goods and regulations for quality control of food and goods, local businesses will find ways to bribe officers so that their products will pass the investigations.
