At first, I had a hard time decided on where in Los Angeles to go and observe for this assignment. There were a lot of great choices because Los Angeles is very diverse city. As the due date of this paper was getting closer, I got an invite from one of my friends to the Cinco De Mayo party that is being thrown by his parents. At first, I was hesitant to say yes, but then I thought about how this would be a great opportunity for my assignment. So I said yes to my friend’s invitation. The last time I went to the park, the air was refreshing and fresh. Several children were making use of the toys and equipment that was available to them at the park. One child was swinging while two others spun around on an old merry-go-round. There were only a few people present at the park that day. When we arrived at the park on Cinco de Mayo, it was the opposite of what I expected or I’ve experienced about parks in the past. For starters, the park was packed with people. I’ve never seen a park so busy. During this said day, the park was a place for the Hispanic people use to escape the constraints of the world. Compared to the time I went to a park; the air was filled with smoke from both the grill and the cigarette people were smoking. The air wasn’t fresh nor refreshing because of all the pollution due to the people that occupied the park. There were a lot of kids running around and playing with the things that was at the park. Compared to the time I went to the park where there were about 3 kids at the park, there were more than 15 kids playing with each other on Cinco de Mayo. About half the people at the park were Consanguineal Kin. Consanguineal Kinship is defined as individuals that are related by blood; this would be my friend’s immediate family, his uncles and aunts, or as they called them, Tio and Tia, grandparents and many more that are blood
In Sueños Americanos: Barrio Youth Negotiating Social and Cultural Identities, Julio Cammarota studies Latina/o youth who live in El Pueblo, and talks about how Proposition 187, the anti-immigrant law, is affecting Latina/o youth in California (Cammarota, 2008, p. 3). In this book review, I will write about the two main points the author is trying to get across. The two main points I will be writing about are how Proposition 187 is affecting the Latina/o community, and about how Latina/o youth are copping in the El Pueblo barrio. Afterward I write about the two main points the author is trying to get across, I will write a brief description of the author and write about the author’s strengths and weaknesses.
Cinco de Mayo is usually confused with Mexican Independence day but that day is when Mexico fought French invaders. During 1910, Mexico revolted against its repressive rulers and adapted its new constitution. They came up with the term for those who were told in Mexico they weren’t Mexican and in America who weren’t American. They wanted to belong to both. While the Civil Rights movement is mostly known to give African-American rights but, Chicanos also fought for their rights. The term Chicano first became accepted during the Chicano Movement. Thus, Chicanos have many things to be proud of. Their Aztec ancestors were intelligent people who built a city on water and made all Chicanos royalty. Along with their Mexican ancestors won two revolutions and won against the huge French army. Trinidad Sanchez Jr., a poet, wrote about Chicano pride in his poem, “Why Am I so Brown?” Sanchez wrote the poem in order to call attention to that all should be proud of their skin color. In Michelle's paper she recaps the history of Mexicans in the United States that was not completely dealt with in either the website or the movie. Michelle points out that the Latin@s history is essential to understanding the Mexicans experience. She also wrote of the Mexican's el movemiento and how the website and movie brought about different accounts of this momentous event.
Although, this was merely an idea and wasn’t by definition. ‘Chicano’ then was described for the Mexican American experience and as historian Ignacio Garcia said, ‘Chicano’ is a Mexican American who understood his/her indigenous roots and avoided change.
A question that every high school student is faced with is: “What extracurricular activities so you participate in?” Some can answer confidently while others are slapped with a moment of sudden realization. These people are just floating along with the crowd, with no driving force or motivation. What I believe differentiates me from my peers and gives me a sense of uniqueness, is what I do outside of my academia. Out of the deluge of activities that are available, Latinos In Action is the one that I feel the most passionate about and shapes my persona the most.
Revolution in Mexico The Mexican independence movement was led by many people including military leader and 11-time president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. This Independence movement occurred due to the success of the Plan de Iguala in 1821. Santa Anna was a Creole born in Veracruz on February 21, 1794. He joined the Spanish military at a young age but later on decided to fight for the movement of the Mexican independence.
The movie “Walkout” is about the school system in East Los Angeles in the late 1960’s. During this time Mexican Americans were treated unfairly and were seen as second class citizens. The story goes through the different aspects that Mexican American/ Chicano students had to put up with within their own schools. They wanted and deserved equal education, but were constantly shut down by the city. This movie contains the four characteristics of Mexican American Art, which is what gives this movies such a strong and meaningful message.
The increase and changing demography in the United State today, with the disparities in the health status of people from different cultural backgrounds has been a challenge for health care professionals to consider cultural diversity as a priority. It is impossible for nurses and other healthcare professionals to learn and understand theses diversity in culture, but using other approaches like an interpreter is very helpful for both nurses and patients. In this paper of a culturally appropriate care planning, I will be discussing on the Hispanic American culture because, I had come across a lot of them in my career as a nurse. The Hispanic are very diverse in terms of communication and communities and include countries like Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, South and Central America, and some of them speak and write English very well, some speaks but can’t write while some can’t communicate in English at all but Spanish.
For many years, unjust treatment of Mexicans and Mexican Americans has occurred in the United States. Over the years, people like Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and Emma Tenayuca have fought to improve civil rights and better treatment for farm workers. The textbook that I have been reading during the semester for my Chicano History class, Crucible of Struggle: A history of Mexican Americans from Colonial times to the Present Era, discusses some of the most important issues in history that Mexicans and Mexicans Americans have gone through. Some of these problems from the past are still present today. Not all of the racial problems were solved, and there is a lot to be done. I have analyzed two different articles about current historical events that have connections between what is happening today and what had happened in Mexican American History.
The struggle to find a place inside an un-welcoming America has forced the Latino to recreate one. The Latino feels out of place, torn from the womb inside of America's reality because she would rather use it than know it (Paz 226-227). In response, the Mexican women planted the seeds of home inside the corral*. These tended and potted plants became her burrow of solace and place of acceptance. In the comfort of the suns slices and underneath the orange scents, the women were free. Still the questions pounded in the rhythm of street side whispers. The outside stare thundered in pulses, you are different it said. Instead of listening she tried to instill within her children the pride of language, song, and culture. Her roots weave soul into the stubborn soil and strength grew with each blossom of the fig tree (Goldsmith).
I was born in Mexico and raised in beautiful San Diego since the age of four. Coming to the United States at a very young age I had to face many challenges that have shaped me to the person that I am today. I consider myself a Chicana woman who has overcome the obstacles to get were I am know. Being raised in a Mexcian household has thought me to embrace my culture and its roots. The Spanish and native blood that is with in me remind me of many Americans today. The reason I consider my self Chicana is because of the similar background that I shared with many Americans today. Dia De Los Muertos happens on November 1st and 2nd, the former used to honor children who have passed and the latter for the adults. Often due to Dia De Los Muertos happening directly after Halloween, it is thought of as Mexico’s own version of Halloween. This cannot be farther from the truth. What is culture? Many people ask themselves this question every day. The more you think about it the more confusing it is. Sometimes you start leaning to a culture and then people tell you you’re wrong or they make you feel like a different person because of your culture. I go through this almost every day. Because of the way I was raised I love Mexican rodeo but I was born and raised in Joliet. This can be very difficult trying to understand culture. I live in this huge mix of culture. Culture is personal. People can have many cultures especially in America and because of globalization. Cultural identity is not one or the other, it is not Mexican or American. Cultural identity is an individual relevant thing.
On December 3, 2016, my mom and I attended the Performing Arts Center to watch Fiesta Mexicana, a Christmas-themed showing of music throughout Mexico. As someone of Mexican descent, I wanted to experience a part of a culture I had little chance to involve myself with growing up, and this show felt like the perfect opportunity to see what both sides of the family had lived around. It was also really entertaining to see my mom and the other attendees dance and sing along throughout the performances, as a majority of the songs were very popular and well known all around Mexico. However, a problem I had with the event was my inability to speak Spanish, with an exception of a few phrases and words. As a result, for much of the commentator 's interaction with the audience, I was entirely dependent on my mom translating the jokes and song history for me.
Independence Day. The day that the entire country rallies together to celebrate one of the biggest parts of its history. Mexico, who has a large population of Mestizo people, had a very interesting turn of events when it came to fighting for independence from Spain. Spain had full control over the colony, only permitting limited trade opportunities and restricting it from other privileges. It only makes sense that the people would rebel and they took their chances when the King of Spain, Ferdinand VII was kidnapped. The Mestizo and the Criollo, which are people from Spanish descent, started forming groups in rebellion to the Spanish crown. Most of which were discovered, and immediately taken down, but one of these groups seemed to raise to the top, seeing that many Spanish Royalists were helping. On the night of September 15, the plan was found out, and in a desperate attempt to save Mexico a man named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla gave the speech of the century.
