Have you ever thought about what you are going to be when you grow up? This is a question that I am sure most of us don’t enjoy being asked. With this question there are many things to consider. How much will it cost to get the education that will be required? Will I really like the career that I have chosen? Will I even be able to get a job? Whatever the question may be, have you ever considered a job in agriculture? When I had first heard about “jobs in agriculture” I thought mainly about farming, and didn’t want to be a part of that. I wanted to be a rich and successful business owner. However, as I have learned, an agricultural job isn’t just farming but there is an entire range of jobs and opportunities in the agricultural field. In fact, only 15% of agricultural jobs are in direct production agriculture. The other 85% of jobs in agriculture come from a broader field, such as the food and fiber industry. 50% of these jobs are in business and management. The remaining 35% of these agricultural jobs are in fields of science, technology, engineering, and math or better known as the STEM fields (DORFMAN). There are many career and job opportunities you can have in agriculture. Energy engineer, agricultural scientist, service manager, business development, agronomist, production line mechanic, these are only a small portion of the many jobs that are in the agricultural field. Many people don 't want a certain career because of the schooling requirements. College’s have decided to make higher qualifications making it harder to enter certain programs. The Director of the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Sonny Ramaswamy, said that the nation’s agricultural businesses are generating 60,000 jobs per year, while its ... ... middle of paper ... ...ays looking for the best in students, and they help them as much as they can, no matter what. Seeing this great example, I have had an interest in becoming an FFA advisor and agricultural education teacher as well because I want to see my hard work and effort pay off in helping someone succeed. There have been many examples and influences in my life that have left an impact on me and I wish to someday be an inspiration to someone else, and I believe I can fulfil that dream as an ag advisor. The key to changing our world is by first teaching and informing those who don 't understand or know about agriculture. The world is waiting to be changed, are we going to make that change by stepping up and realizing the demand for Agricultural Education teachers? If not us, then who? Nelson Mandela once said “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.”
