NU 413 Quality Care and Patient Safety Week 8 Discussion Board Post
According to the International Council of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine, one of the reasons for the current and future shortages of nurses relates to the work environment (climate/culture) (as stated in Stone P.W. (2008). The climate (environment) and culture (philosophy, principles, beliefs and values) aspects of an organization should be a system of shared assumptions, values, and beliefs, which governs how people behave in organizations. Strong leaders can educate, coach and mentor other workers, identify strengths and weaknesses in others and manage employees to reach goals in an efficient manner. Clearly, understanding organizational aspects that promote a stable workforce is important. Organizational climate is one of the all-encompassing, across-the-discipline aspects found in the healthcare work environment (Stone P.W. (2008). et al).
Identify and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the work environment at your practice.

For me as an experience professional, sharing in decision-making, being active in creating standards of excellence (based on evidence-based data), and then setting an example for others to follow. Being involved and active in organizational climate (environment), and the setting of my own practice (critical care), is the best way of advocating for change, thus improving the environment in which nurses work can attract new students to nursing as well as engage current professionals in developing new creative models of care delivery that promote changes in practice and patient outcomes AHRQ. If anyone knows me as a person, they will tell you that I’m adamant and open. I have no problem jumping up to the table and making my suggestions known if it has to do with a patient/resident getting the proper care. I learned from my clinical instructor it was that you stick up for your patients/resident no matter what and this is what I have set out to do. I always think that the resident/patient is my family member. With all the hustle and bustle of today and the pressures of the health care industry. I find that nurses have a hard time prioritizing their care and day. We either get scolded for not clocking out on time, the call bell on too long or using too many supplies. The companies and facilities want us to be happy and retain their nurses. When I am working day to day, I constantly am looking at the six “AIMS for Improvement”. The sixth on equitable is a
Reflecting on one’s own feeling, beliefs, fears, and weaknesses is a good way to evaluate the needs for improvement and limitations in a nursing practice. This paper will review my top three priorities for my nursing practice, barriers that challenge my priorities, my experiences in the clinical world and the different role models in the nursing profession. I will also be discussing my commitment to improving patient care and safety.
The title caught my attention: “Work Environment and Conditions”. The nurse’s role has long been considered as stress-filled based upon the physical labor, human suffering, work hours, staffing, and interpersonal relationships that are central to the work nurses do. The article examined many studies conducted to measure stress and burnout in nurses and found that the environment and conditions in the work place have a great deal to do with the perceived stress levels. In the article, it speaks of the definition of stress as being a negative factor that is perceived to pose a threat to the perceiver. This definition goes on to state that one person may see an event as stressful while another may view the same situation as exhilarating. The important part of this “new definition” is that we can chose, by manipulation of our attitudes, to view our lives as stress filled or an enjoyable ride? One’s perception is a big factor regarding workplace stress. I notice that newer nurses feel a great amount of pressure to do things perfectly, which anyone who has been in nursing a while can tell you that nursing is an imperfect profession. We are humans caring for other humans and we are all just doing the best that we can and what is in the best interest of our patients. Maintaining a positive attitude is important, and challenging at times. Even though the environment that many of us work in is controlled, good or bad many of the things that occur are beyond our control. Learning to go with the flow and ask for help when needed can make nursing a little bit less overwhelming. I think it is important for nurses experiencing burnout to talk to someone about it and maybe think about making a change in their workplace if possible to obtain a new challenge and help keep nursing fresh and exciting for them. I also find it interesting that as nurses, we are so prone to
As a whole, environment is beyond the person’s control. This can be classified as external environment. On the other hand, within the external environment there is an internal one. This internal environment is what the person makes of it. These internal environments can also be further divided into spiritual and emotional. The external environments also comprises the social and cultural. Based on these classification, the nurse’s role varies. In terms of the social and cultural environment, the nurse has to conform to the social and cultural ideals and way of life. Then by comparing her ideals to the environments and to the nursing process, he/she can have an effective plan that will benefit the given
The prolonged shortage of skilled nursing personnel has been a serious concern to the healthcare industry, and this shortage has impacted the quality of care delivery. In addition, nursing turnover has also exacerbated the problem of nursing shortage. Nursing shortage has been blamed on many nurses retiring and less younger nurses joining the occupation. There is also an increase in life expectancy (baby boomers) leading an increase in both physical and mental ailment with subsequent demand in nursing care. Nurses are also leaving nursing profession because of inadequate staffing, tense work environment, negative press about the profession, and inflexible work schedules. Even though nursing is a promising career and offers job security, the
After completing registered nursing school in 2006, a few years later, I obtained a bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in 2016. Over the last 10 years, I have tried to look for inefficient procedures, finds ways to streamline them, and consistently have striven to boost the productivity of everyone around me. Working as a nursing supervisor an area hospital for the last 3 years, I have tried to promote healthy patient outcomes. I understand the need for procedures but I also try to maximized the time spent educating the patients and family. By allowing time for good explanations to both the patient and family development of an understanding their disease process can occur. This empowers them to make informed decisions and promote health improvements. Throughout my career in nursing, I have tried to successfully communicate and partner with other members in
A very important concept that needs to be implemented world-wide is collaboration. Collaboration can be defined as “working with other individuals or groups to achieve a common goal. It differs from cooperation which involves groups working together to achieve their own individual goals’’ (Tomajan, 2012). This concept is critical in making the nursing image as clear and accurate as possible while also properly representing the profession. Worldwide, if nurses can represent themselves in a particular way, having the same ideals, morals, and knowledge, there would be little room for people to criticize the profession. Collaborating also allows for the formation of new ideas and discoveries, strengthening the knowledge of nurses and creating the opportunity for more authority. The entire profession as a whole need to help everyone understand what nurses really do for patients. Nurses are the invisible hand behind the success in every hospital or health-care facility. From a quick visit to the doctors to an emergency room visit, the ones the patients interact with and grow a relationship with are the nurses. The nurses know the ins and outs of every patient and have the direct connection with the patient along with tremendous knowledge and skills. This needs to be addressed in the media rather than challenging the nursing image. Giving
There are several nurses that have established themselves successfully in the work I am pursuing. The work mainly involves care management, client teaching and patient advocacy. Care management focuses on ensuring that the care that various health care providers offer is cohesive to meet the patients’ needs. Client teaching deals with enabling patient gain knowledge about the medications and health. Patient advocacy is involved with protecting and advancing patients’ rights.
learning and how myself as practitioner can give to an effective learning environment. I have been a critical care nurse working in intensive care unit for almost seven years. I am graduated from local nursing school in 2002. At first, I worked on a regular hospital floor. One year later, I came to intensive care unit and obtained my intensive care post basic certificate in 2006. I was attracted to critical care nursing because of the challengers and the environment. Here in the intensive care unit my nursing skills and role continues to evolve.
Being a registered nurse affords one the option of working in many diverse healthcare settings. In any practice setting the climate of health care change is evident. There are diverse entities involved in the implementation and recommendation of these practice changes. These are led by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), nursing campaign for action initiatives, as well as individual state-based action coalitions. Nurses need to be prepared and cognizant of the transformations occurring in health care settings as well as the plans that put them at the forefront of the future.
I remember there was a time on my first few weak of orientation I felt like I didn’t belong the healthcare field. I was about to quit the nursing profession, but one of the experienced nurses who was working with me told me that you couldn't run away from yourself just hang in there you will figure it out you are not the alone. I could say there was a significant gap between theory and practice. In real life practice, I learned so many things through everyday training and experiences from working difference patients with the different case. In school, we learned the importance of evidence-based practice but to incorporate that knowledge in real life practice is a different problem. In nursing practices, we come across patients with various health issues that require a solution right then. From this vantage point, the student begins to learn the value of looking at what is perceived as pure clinical problems in a more significant context. (Ferrara, 2010). Not only has this brought the theory we have learned in school and what a nurse has experienced in clinical setting closing this
Managers are called upon to understand and lead an ever-diversifying workforce. However, a manager’s job does not end there; these individuals also need to develop an understanding of themselves in order to manage effectively. Identifying strengths and weaknesses and areas in need of personal development is a career long endeavor. While we are all unique and will develop our own personal leadership style, there are several core efficiencies we must have in order to be excellent managers.
As a leader, it is important to create a positive work environment that is based on honesty, trust, and values. The return from creating an environment that is based on these traits will lead to increased employee motivation, communication, productivity, cohesiveness, collaboration, and commitment that will move the organization forward to achieve great things. It is important as a leader to bring your employees together to work as part of a team and create a positive, healthy work environment. Health care leaders should strive to support and encourage both individual and team participation on all levels to create efficiencies within the workplace (Dye, 2010). Honesty, trust, and values are important concepts in creating an effective team
This is because they have a significant ownership and power in fostering change to the image of nursing practice. In light of this, the primary objective of the nursing profession is foreseeing an honest image in all interactions. Nurses play many roles which involve interactions with various people such as patients, clinical staff, families and public in general. For this reason, every nurse must participate actively in promoting professionalism. In supporting these attributes, nursing leaders, as well as related staff, play a vital role in shaping, impacting and promoting the image of nursing at large. In achieving this, the staffs and leaders must represent modern professional standards in their practices as a way of ensuring that nursing objectives and goals are attained. Leaders must emphasize and practice in ensuring that the image of nursing is perceived in a more progressive
First, work pressure is caused by various factors result of the inability of the individual to do his working required of him. First reason is a lot of working that makes employees feel bored and nervous. Doctor leaves all the works that should do him. Next reason, the nurses cannot take the time to rest and relax during the work of the causes of the pressure of work period. In some hospitals there are a little number of nurses or other way hospitals are suffering a shortage of nurses and doctor therefore have to work on nurses not only be able to take a break. Third, the lack of positive reinforcement and by not rewarding nurses at achieving excellent work. It can be barriers to organizational diversity because they can harm working relationships and damage morale and work productivity. There are Negative attitudes and behaviors in the hospitals workplace Such as, the negative nurses who speaks with doctor or other nurses by negative way and not smile. For example, when the others asked his opinion about something like patient result to gives them his opinion by negative way just the result do not read that. Another example, negative employee does not smile and nervous where affects patient when he goes to find addresses and nervosas nurses gives a patient negative idea therefore does not accept the patients treatment and does not want to go to the hospitals
