Starting in 190CE and ending in 407CE, the fall of Western Rome didn’t just happen after one dramatic event. The outbursts and riots lasted for 286 years. Many people helped destroy the Western Roman Empire including the barbarians/non-romans, the praetorian guards/the golden soldiers, Constantine the emperor, Romulous and the German leader Flavius Odovacar. While Rome was being ramp sacked from Germanic and other barbaric groups, the imperial power shifted to the eastern part of the Roman Empire, where the center city was Byzantium (Craig/Graham/Kagan/Ozment /Turner, 354, 2009). Between 324 and 330 BCE, Constantine the Great became emperor and rebuilt the city and renamed it after himself (Craig/Graham/Kagan/Ozment /Turner, 354, 2009). The fall of Rome occurred over many centuries and was caused by several factors including military decay, barbarian invasions, and the failure of the government to respond to these problems.
With the largest empire at the time, Rome had an equal fall from grace. Rome fell because of the political corruption, inflation and the decline in morals of its citizens. By about the second century AD, Rome was suffering from political corruption. In 218 AD, Elagabalus rose to power and he was crazy. The Roman public had their fair share of bad emperors, but a guy that marries 5 women and 1 dude, at that time, was a little scary.
The last reason that caused the fall of Rome was the multiple natural disasters that happened in the year 336 CE. There were many reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire. Each one interweaved with the other. Many even blame the initiation of Christianity in 337 AD by Constantine the Great as the definitive cause while others blame it on increases in unemployment, inflation, military expenditure and slave labour while others blame it on the ethical issues such as the decline in morals, the lack of discipline of the armies and the political corruption within the Empire. Three major contributions that led to the collapse of the once great empire were: the heavy military spending in order to expand the Empire, the over-reliance on slave labour which led to an increase in unemployment, and the political corruption and abuse of power by the Praetorian Guard leading to the unfair selection of many disreputable emperors and the assassination of those not favoured by the Guard. One of the main reasons for the collapse of the Roman Empire was the over expenditure on the military to constantly fund wars abroad.
For a long period of time, Rome seemed like an unstoppable empire. It conquered the majority of the land surrounding it, including Greece, Turkey, Iraq, and many of its other neighboring countries. It seemed as though Rome would conquer the entire world, as it was the center of it, until it began to decline in 476 C.E. The very aspects that made it so successful were the ones that caused its collapse. Various political, religious, and economic reasons caused its downfall. The fact that the entire economy of Rome collapsed and money became worthless was a major reason for the empire’s collapse. In addition, the loss of a common religion and lack of efficient ruling in relation to its vast territory affected the empire. The Roman Empire did not become so successful in a short period of time, and so its decline did not just happen overnight. Over several years all of these different aspects together caused the fall of the Roman Empire.
Technically, the Roman Empire didn’t fall until the 1400’s. Splitting up the Empire at the Time made sense, because the Roman Empire was too big to rule effectively by one man. Moving the the capital to Constantinople also made sense, because first it was located on a peninsula, which made defending the capital easier. Every argument has two sides. One of the greatest examples of this is the Mongols, the largest empire to have ever been created. During its greatest height in the 13th century, the Mongols are thought to be one of the most barbaric empires to have ever existed. Yet, they show great signs of being civilized. To better understand what the Mongols should be classified as, there needs to be a platform on what is barbaric and what is civilized. To be barbaric is to have no sense of mercy and to have a society that is not fully developed. To be civilized, on the other hand, is to be fully developed, unified, and to act in a well-mannered fashion. Taking all of this into account, it can be determined that the Mongols are barbaric. Although the Mongols can seem civilized through the building of their public works, keeping them unified, they were in truth barbaric because of their harsh laws and ruthless military tactics. This brutal lifestyle made the people living under the Mongolian empire fearful, preventing the full development of the society.
All the way from the start of civilization through to the Early Christianity there has been a pantheon of; destruction, recognition, wars, cultural diffusion, religious breakthroughs, laws that have been established, kings and queens crowned and dethroned. The Mesopotamian Civilization it was the land between two rivers the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers that civilization first began.
It is a common thing: an innocent, kind, humane person joins the military, goes to war, and comes back as a psychological disaster. They either become paranoid, depressed, anything to this nature. However, there are also individuals who go to war with prior psychological conditions. In J.M. Coetzee’s novel “Waiting for the Barbarians”, is reflective of these two situations. In the novel, war breaks out between an Empire and a group of nomads, the barbarians. In between all of this, is the protagonist, the magistrate, a man with a position of power in the military, who opposes the war. Much like actual war, there is an array of different psychological disorders portrayed through the characters, with some characters having disorders before that influence their performance in battle, or those who get them after, as a result of the horrific acts of torture and violence they either see or experience. While characters like Colonel Joll and Mandel have psychological conditions that make them ideal torturers, their victims display their own psychological disorders that result from the torture inflicted upon them. And though the citizens are not directly fighting in this war, they fall victim to the pressures of war and Colonel Joll and compromise their personal beliefs and morals in favor of the majority rule.
Rome was massive. It is known to be the first city that held one million citizens. It was also strong. The army was huge, and Rome seemed invincible, but unfortunately, Rome started to molder. Political aspects, economical issues, deadly diseases, and ruthless foreign invaders all eventually lead to the fall of the seemingly undefeatable Western Roman Empire.
The fall of the Roman Empire was a non-expected fall after a long time of control. Still to this date, Rome is history’s biggest empire so far lasting about 1000 years. The 147 emperors show how long the empire lasted. The fall happened because during the end of the Empire, Rome was changing for the worst. There were good and bad times before the Roman Empire before the fall of the empire. Specific reasons of why Rome fell include Christianity becoming the religion of Rome because of the reform by Emperor Constantine, the Roman Empire became too big, and the empire decayed without problems being fixed.
