Advertisements are Misleading our Girls
Children are the easiest to persuade with strong messages in advertising; these messages are negatively affecting our children by skewing their ideas of who they are and how to fit into society. The media is controlling them physical and emotionally because children believe what they see. Some of the down sides of advertisements are that they influence children there is nothing more important than their look. They use pretty girls to advertise their junk product which affect young girl’s health. Moreover, they use different media such as phones, internet and other social media to introduce girls to unrealistic body image (sexualized) and violence. Young girls are having access to a lot of media that are hard to control and they are bombarded with messages from different media and their peers. Accord Teen Fact, survey was done in Septembers 2012, about 78%of teens have a cell phone and about half of those own smartphones. Also, about 74% of teens have accessed the internet through a mobile device. The survey also mention that eight out of ten teenagers have some form of computer. A lot of parents do not have enough knowledge or control of mass media; therefore, young girls are exposed to many damaging advertises. Social media are everywhere and they are complicated. They are in schools, newspapers, social media, music, and website and so on. The images and words used for social media advertisements are affecting children by introducing them to violence and sexualized images. For example, teen magazine is all about looks or how to improve your look. “Flip through any popular magazine and you find ads that are unabashedly, unapologetically sexual. Victoria’s Secret, Calvin Klein and every other clothing and fragrance marketer uses sex to sell.” (O’Neill 141) The girls sometimes want to get some simple fashion tips and they look through the magazines like, seventeen or teen magazine, but the messages they find is about sex and appearance most of the time. Women are portrayed, their look is the main focus in the advertisement. They use pictures, colors and words used for these magazine, invite the girls to read them at the checkout.
