What are the factors driving young users’ engagement with a social networking site and what are the factors that impact users’ frequency and attitude toward social networking sites?
Entering college usually means a different stage of life for most students when they have to adapt into this strange, new environment far away from their parents and friends. According to the study by Sponcil and Gitimu (2013) about how social media impacts students’ communication with friends and families: after conducting a questionnaire among 96 undergraduate students (67 females and 29 males) aged between 18-33, they found connecting with family and friends was the most popular reason that students use social media for (91.7%), followed by entertainment (59.4%) and relieving boredom (57.3%) (Sponcil and Gitimu, 2013). Also, 50% of the students indicated that they would communicate with family and friends on social networking sites every day (Sponcil and Gitimu, 2013). Maintaining the relationship with people you knew when adapting to a new environment seems to be a huge factor for why students use social networking sites like Facebook. Technology has become so heavily integrated into our society, that if you stop and take a good look around you, chances are, those in your vicinity are most likely using some form of technology or another in their daily lives. This generation—my generation grows as technology does. It has become integrated into most of our lives—our education, and even has the ability to influence our decisions depending on what forms of technology people intentionally use. That being said, certain types of individuals (those who are introverted, versus those who are extroverted) may be attracted to different types of social media, the individual qualities they possess, and the possible benefits that the website can offer. Because the technology on our phones and laptops are so easily accessible, and extremely relevant, it may be important to study how certain personality types are more inclined to be attracted to certain types of Social Media.

Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.
This study examines social media among college students and how it affects self-concept and communication with peers. It explains the importance of the effects social media has on personal communication and self-esteem. It emphasizes that social media offer straightforward ways to communicate with peers and get immediate peer feedback, which might influence young adult’s self-esteem. Instagram was founded in 2010 by Kevin Systrom. Kevin was born on December 30, 1983 in Holliston Massachusetts. As a child, he was introduced to a game called Doom 2, which spark an interest in computer programming. This literature review will examine and synthesize the published current research concerning the impact of Facebook on college students’ academic performance. Even though most studies are inconclusive in determining the relationship between Facebook and academic performance, all researchers contribute to understanding the way that Facebook might affect students’ academic achievement. While some studies speculate that Facebook does not impact academic outcomes, most studies show that there is a significant relationship between Facebook usage and college students’ academic performance, which is indicated by GPAs and students’ engagements.
