Lebanon is a diverse small mountainous country in Asia (Darwiche 3: 1266). Despite Lebanon’s small size, it was recorded recorded to have a population close to 3.5 million people in the late 90 's (Darwiche 3: 1266). However, the population has greatly risen since that time due to approximately one million Syrian refugees entering the country (Cammett). Lebanon and the United States contrast in many ways in terms of religion and how it affects government and education, but there are more similarities in these categories than one might predict. Lebanon is a diverse country with many different cultures; Therefore, Lebanon has a wide variety of religious practices. There are many active religions in Lebanon, but Islam and Christianity are the most prevalent (Badr 7). Islam is the most popular religion in Lebanon with close to 60 percent of the Lebanese practicing Islam, but Christianity follows closely at 40 percent (Badr 7). The Sunni and Shia denominations dominate the Muslim community in terms of possessing the most followers (Cammett). Not only is Islam dominated by certain denominations, but Christianity also has a dominating denomination. The Maronite Church, an Eastern Catholic Church in the Middle East, is clearly the most popular throughout Lebanon (Cammett; Fink). Lebanon’s main religions, Christianity and Islam, have a great influence on Lebanon. Religion affects aspects of Lebanon from the way the country is run, to how parents educate their children. On another note, Lebanon also shares qualities with the United States. Although religion is very important in America, Americans do not let religion influence things like government and education the way that the Lebanese do.
