Retaining Students vs. Social Promotion Are students being socially promoted to the next grade when they should be retained? Retention is the practice of holding a student in the same grade for a year or longer. Social promotion is the practice of allowing the student to move into the next grade level even though they have not mastered the requirements of their current grade. This topic has been studied and debated for decades and will probably be debated for more decades to come. The argument is that social promotion is better for students than retention. This paper will look at retention and socially promoting students to see which is the better choice to make. There can be a number of reasons a student may be retained instead of being promoted to the next grade level. One reason and probably the most common is that the student is struggling academically. A study done in Florida has shown that student who were retained end up performing at higher levels in Math and Literacy than the peers who were promoted (West). Retention gives students a stable and familiar atmosphere to learn and allows those that are developmentally behind a chance to mature before proceeding on to the next grade level (Meador). The student and parents already have a relationship with the teacher which will help with the adjustment of staying behind. Retention also increases the chance for an intensive intervention in the needed areas (Meador). The intervention can consist of special education services, accommodations with assignments or tutoring. For some students the threat of being retained pushes them to try to do better on their work and to mature a little faster
