What Activity Did You Attend and Why Did You Select this Event? I attended a field action event with a representative from Compassion & Choices of California (CCC). The field action event consisted of Vincent, a trained volunteer professional, who has been with CCC for many years, and I. This was my first time to partake in any field action event. The field action event took place at the Pasadena Farmer’s Market, Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 9:00AM to 11:00AM. The main objective was to present information, face to face, about SB 128. While talking to others about SB 128, I noticed, “an in-person advocacy effort shows the most commitment, because it is the most trouble for the advocate to do” (Hoefer, 2012, p. 138). It took a lot of courage and confidence for me to stand among a group of people and say, “Please help me make SB 128, End of Life Option Act, become a law in the state of California so that we can end the suffering of terminal ill individuals.” I was scared for the first 20 minutes, but after a while I adjusted to my surroundings. In fact, this agency is truly dedicated to helping individuals die with dignity. Also, CCC is a nonprofit organization that advocates for individuals to have the most serene death conceivable. If SB 128 is passed into law, it will allow “terminal ill individual adults in California in the final stages of his/her disease to request medication from a physician to bring about a peaceful death” (Senate Bill 128, 2015). Advocating at Pasadena Farmer’s Market helped me realize that I’m taking a stance and speaking for others who can’t be heard. Barbra Huttmann’s purpose in writing her story in A Crime of Compassion is to convince people that no matter their beliefs, it is sometimes more humane to let someone die if they are suffering. This ongoing debate whether or not to assist in death with patients who have terminal illness has been and is still far from over. Before continuing, the definition of Right to Die is, “an individual who has been certified by a physician as having an illness or physical condition which can be reasonably be expected to result in death in 24 months or less after the date of the certification” (Terminally Ill Law & Legal Definition 1). America is a champion of the freedom of choice. Citizens have the right to choose their religion, their political affiliation, and make personal decisions about nearly every facet of their daily lives. Despite all of these opportunities, one choice society commonly ignores is that of deciding how one’s life will end. Death seems like a highly unpredictable, uncontrollable occurrence, but for the past 17 years, citizens of Oregon have had one additional option not offered to most Americans in the deciding of their end-of-life treatment. Oregon’s Death With Dignity Act (DWDA), passed in 1994, allows qualified, terminally-ill Oregon patients to end their lives through the use of a doctor-prescribed, self-administered, lethal prescription (Office of Disease Prevention and Epidemiology, n.d.). The nationally controversial act has faced injunctions, an opposing measure, and has traveled to the Supreme Court, however it still remains in effect today.
After our discussion Rick formed a meeting to begin organizing a lobby group. They created an agenda which included an invite of social service agencies to the meeting to discuss suggestions from them on how to develop a lobby group. They prepared a mission statement believing it will unite the group, as well as provide focus and draw attention to the lobby group. In this meeting the five set up an outline that involved organizing the group to address the needs of people with disabilities and how the inequality and stigma they face creates social barriers. They chose to focus on the challenges that Rick and the initial six members were experiencing which are lack funding by the government in the way of inadequate assistance for housing, personal finances and jobs. In this meeting they decided to recruit members through the local paper, the recreation center and door to door canvassing. One of the members suggested using social media and the United Way offered to help by placing a thread on their web page. The six members share their personal stories via a video on the website. The website would be filled with current information about the effects on society when there is lack of adequate resources in a city and have a discussion forum and sign up tab. They decided to take advantage of the fact an election was imminent in the next 12 months by preparing to lobby the elected representatives in their district.

Kenneth Schwartz was a health-care lawyer who had only been exposed to the business side of healthcare. It was not until he was diagnosed with lung cancer that he would experience another role in healthcare, being a patient. The battle he was up against would not only be physical but also emotional. In the end, Schwartz lost his battle against lung cancer just under a year of being diagnosed. The one thing he repeatedly emphasized was the empathetic acts of kindness the caregivers bestowed upon him. Cancer to him was not just about physically beating the cancer, it was for his well-being as a whole ,and his desire to stay intact through out the process. He may have lost his battle with cancer but the care he was provided kept him hopeful and optimistic until his untimely passing. Compassionate care should be a staple for all healthcare providers. It can improve outcomes of health, increase the satisfaction of the patient, and aid in better adherence to recommendations from the caregivers. Patients should never feel they are being rushed, that they are not important, or that they are not receiving the best provision of care possible.
The right to assisted suicide is a significant topic that concerns people all over the United States. The debates go back and forth about whether a dying patient has the right to die with the assistance of a physician. Some are against it because of religious and moral reasons. Others are for it because of their compassion and respect for the dying. Physicians are also divided on the issue. They differ where they place the line that separates relief from dying--and killing. For many the main concern with assisted suicide lies with the competence of the terminally ill. Many terminally ill patients who are in the final stages of their lives have requested doctors to aid them in exercising active euthanasia. It is sad to realize that these people are in great agony and that to them the only hope of bringing that agony to a halt is through assisted suicide.When people see the word euthanasia, they see the meaning of the word in two different lights. Euthanasia for some carries a negative connotation; it is the same as murder. For others, however, euthanasia is the act of putting someone to death painlessly, or allowing a person suffering from an incurable and painful disease or condition to die by withholding extreme medical measures. But after studying both sides of the issue, a compassionate individual must conclude that competent terminal patients should be given the right to assisted suicide in order to end their suffering, reduce the damaging financial effects of hospital care on their families, and preserve the individual right of people to determine their own fate.

The field placement experience at Silver Saddle group home allowed me the opportunity to put into practice what I have learned while in the Social Work program her at Northern Arizona University. Throughout field placement I have had the opportunity to practice on a micro, mezzo, and macro level and strengthen my professional social work skill while maintaining a ethical standpoint. Field has also allowed me hands on experience to advocate for clients, insure social justice, provide services, and build strong relationships with clients and the community.

Rogrigues, a high-profile, terminally-ill resident of British Columbia, Canada, suffered from a terminally ill disease (Robinson, 2001). She was helped to commit suicide by a physician in violation of Canadian law. Many people, like Rodrigues, want to be in control of their final days. Terminally ill patients have a terminal disease and do not want to diminish their assets by incurring large medical costs as their death approaches (Robinson, 2001). As an act of generosity, they would rather die sooner, and pass on their assets to their beneficiaries. A serious disorder or disease has adversely affected their quality of life to the point where they no longer wish to continue living (Johansen, 2000). Myself, along with many other United States citizens believe that euthanasia should be legalized within the United States for reasons concerning medical advances, the severity of pain a person is in once diagnosed with a terminal illness, and the basic fact that a person’s life is their own life and no one else’s.
