Outdoor entertainment was a favorite pastime of many families, and Wham-O provided many with hours of fun. In 1957, Wham-O released the first Frisbee toy. The inventor, Walter Morrison got the idea for the toy in the late 1940’s and developed a plastic version that would fly easily. He “originally named it the ‘“Pluto Platter”’ hoping to cash in on the alleged flying saucer sightings at the time” (Epstein 34). The toy company Wham-O bought it and changed it’s name to Frisbee, which came from a story about how college kids would fly pie pans around from a Pie company named Frisbee Pie Company. The Frisbee became popular and is still around today, albeit modifications have been made (Epstein 34). Another popular luxury that came about in 1957 and is still around today is the Frozen Pizza. The Calentano Brothers’ Frozen Pizza was the first-ever frozen pizza on the market (Epstein 34). The frozen pizza became the best selling item in the frozen food isles of grocery stores. People could not comfortably eat and watch TV in the comfort of their home. Because of this, Pizza restaurants became a regular staple in the American restaurant industry. Music discs were being sold like never before. The music’s “heavy rhythm, simple melodies, and lyrics- featuring love, cars, and the problems of being young- captivated teenagers across the country” (Danzer 656). Musicians such as Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and most notably, Elvis Presley, gained popularity by aiming their lyrics at teenage audiences (Epstein 36).
In addition, “American Bandstand, a rock and roll show directed at teenagers and young adults played an important roll in helping rock music find a large, nation-wide audience” (Schwartz 5). Even so, many adults didn’t agree with the music because they believed that the lyrics were too vulgar and would lead to immoral behavior of teenagers
