Westward Expansion The Westward Expansion had a really big impact and very much antagonized the relationship between the Northern and the Southern states during the time of 1800s through the 1860s. Both states had very different lifestyles which made them tremendously different from each other. The North was very industrial based, while the South was very agricultural based and farmed a lot. Over time they each side developed their own identity and felt that their life was way better than the others. The Southern states were a very big fan of slavery while the Northern states were not. Since the missouri compromise of 1820 only kept the union together for only 30 years, it was time for a new change that kept mending the union together. May 30, 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was established which the territories of Kansas and Nebraska had to decide whether they were going to allow slavery to be allowed in their borders. This Act followed the Missouri Compromise to reassure the prohibited slavery north of the latitude of 36”30’. The 36”30’ line detected that every North of this line was closed to slavery and everything south was open slavery The Kansas-Nebraska Act infuriated many in the northern states who wanted the Missouri Compromise to be long term binding contract for the north and the south. After this Act was passed, everyone rushed to Kansas to see what the effect of the outcome of the election was going to be. This all resulted in a big blow up between the anti-slavery settlers and the pro-slavery settlers because of the outcome. This is why Kansas’ territory earned the nickname “bleeding Kansas” was because of the outburst of both settlers. The North and the South really butted heads towards the end which resulted in the Civil War. The South didn’t like the fact that the north was getting more resources such as railroads, industrial technology, technology, and other things that the south wanted. They were also very terrified of the north expanding into their territory and abolishing slavery all over. The North received a big impact from this when the economy dropped right before the Civil war took place. Since the economy was so industrial based this really affected what they were doing, as for the south, they were continuing to sell cotton and nothing was putting them in jeopardy.
