The plays Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story have significant similarities and differences between each other. The plays are very similar in the cast and main parts of the storyline, but there were still differences in the storyline that weren’t transferred into to movie and also aspects were added to the original storyline.
The characters were very similar as for most of them matched up to the original set of characters from Romeo and Juliet. For example in West Side Story Doc is very similar to Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet because Romeo and Tony both go to him to talk about marrying someone that they like. Romeo and Juliet is a play about two lovers who have to risk their lives in order to demonstrate their love and will to stay together, regardless the feud between their families. By the end, the death of Romeo and Juliet finally bring the reconciliation to these two families. The plays Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and Our Town by Thornton Wilder are similar in their use of imagination, dramatic technique, and the way town life was used. There is not many props in the play Our Town, so it is up to the viewers to imagine what is happening and how the setting looks. Romeo and Juliet, similar to Our Town, required viewers to imagine the setting as there was no backdrops, no lighting, and little or no props. This was demonstrated in both the play and the film when Romeo and Juliet kept secretly meeting each other even though they knew it was against their families’ wishes. In one scene of both the movie and the play Romeo and Juliet even got married and died together so that even if they could not be together on earth they would be together in death.

Many of Shakespeare’s works are considered literary classics, but none are more loved than Romeo and Juliet. This play masterfully tells the love story of two teenagers in Elizabethan England. The title characters Romeo and Juliet are members of two feuding families, Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. There are different stylistic ways of portraying Romeo and Juliet, and the two most popular film versions portray two very different styles of this one play. Amazing as it may seem, both films follow Shakespeare's script perfectly, and the impression that is left in the viewer is utterly different, though. This might be due to the different performances and direction, together with a different selection of passages to be included. The 1968 Franco Zeffirelli version of Shakespeare’s play, set in the Renaissance era of the 17th century, seems to be more of a better portrayed version than that of the 1996 Baz Luhrmann version, set in a more modern time of the 20th century. The Baz Luhrmann version of the play seems to be a lot more contempory than the older version. The way that Baz has cast the movie first of all gives the impression that this particular version of Romeo & Juliet is going to be very modernised than that of the Franco Zeffirelli version. The casting includes Leonardo De Caprio, and Clair Danes, both of which are not very suitable for the roles of Romeo & Juliet, as they give a more 21st century feel to the film than the casting of the Franco ...
