De drukte in de steeds groter wordende steden zorgden voor een milieu probleem. Mensen woonde te dicht op elkaar. Er was ook nog geen waterleiding, riool en vuilophaaldienst. Veel mensen dachten daardoor dat het makkelijker was om het in de gracht te gooien. ( bron 62 ) Daarnaast was het water dat in de gracht liep zwaar vervuilt. Ook de bedrijven langs het water dumpte alles maar en zo waren ook de grachten zwaar verontreinigd. De milieuproblemen waren lokaal dus de boeren op het land merkte niets van de zwaar vervuilde en stinkende buurten in de stad. Het meeste afval dat in de grachten gedumpt werd was organisch, dat zorgde ervoor dat uiteindelijk de natuur zelf het afval kon afbreken. There were many advances that were made in medicine which led to people living longer than before.
