Ethos is competent by President Obama giving factual information. Giving examples from historical references; he illuminates his family tree. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton's Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas.” Therefore President Obama gave creditability and validation to the speech. Proving he is the authority as well as implying that the nation should listen to him because he understands first hand.
