I live in an industrial region in Karanganyar where there are many plants for textile and food (tea, sugar, etc.). During rainy season, flood always occur in our neighborhood. I remember one time, the water was waist-deep, but as the rain stopped, the water was increasing, had a blue color, and even smelled like a chemical odor. It was believed that the company took advantage of the flood to dispose their waste water, though this was never proven. The river water also became polluted and turned bright green as the waste from several plants was thought to have mixed. The year was 2000 and the awareness of protecting the environment has not been as it is today. I felt helpless and frustrated that I could not do anything. My unfortunate hands-on experience with flood, the effect it had on me towards the environment, was the determination I had (until now) to learn, contribute and improve our environmental engineering and management.
