I am writing in response to your request that I analyze Johnson 's "Bottled water, go away" and make a recommendation for or against publication in The Shorthorn. I have analysed Johnson 's rhetorical appeals and determined that the contents of her article are very relevant to The Shorthorn readers. I recommend this article to be published in The Shorthorn because it discusses bottled water and relates that with environment and health. Johnson 's claim, reasons, evidence, ethos, logos, pathos, counterargument are very relevant for readers of The Shorthorn. Especially readers who prefer bottled water and are not serious about the recycling of those bottles are the target audience of this publication but it
Despite my now positive opinion, I have to avow that when I first picked up A History of the World in 6 Glasses, I did not expect to enjoy it. Though I am a “To die For Fan” of three of the beverages used I simply felt no interest in how the world's history had anything to do with them. However, what I quickly learned is that this book is not a history of 6 drinks, but rather just as the title states, a history of the world, told through the story of 6 drinks. The book also made it clear that second to oxygen, that liquids are necessary to humanity. In my opinion, I do agree with the statement that the availability of water and other drinking sources have "constrained and guided humankind's progress" and "have continued to shape human history". Throughout time drinks have not only quenched our thirst; but served as medicines, currencies, and religious rights. It also served as a symbol of wealth and power,as well as tools to appease the poor.
Tom Standage has described the beginnings of six beverages: beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola and has found many connections, and information helpful in finding out history of the drinks themselves but also their impacts on the growth of civilization as a whole. This book connects everything with society both past and present, it makes learning about history and the way drinks connect fun and interesting. Like learning without even realizing you are. A History of the World in Six Glasses is more than just talking about each beverage as a single but as a whole, it’s connections, uses, relations, and growth they started.
As a sub-claim, Barnett and Gleick illustrate how marketing and false advertising play a major role in the creation of the grandiose image of bottled water. As a ground Barnett states, how “Aquafina” gets their water from the Detroit River”, however places “snow-capped mountain peaks” on its labels, while “Everest Water” comes from “Corpus Christi, not Mt. Everest”, and “Glacier Clear Water” is actually “tap water from Greeneville, Tennessee” (Barnett 34). Barnett states the actual sources of well-known bottling companies, which are consumed by many people on a daily basis. Reading this information allows the audience to reconsider their previous beliefs on bottled water and not base all their judgment on labels. Another ground used by Barnett, is how a beverage analyst, Hemphill, believes “consumers base their bottles-water decisions on three things: convenience, the packaging, and the price as more important than whether its drinking water or spring water” (Barnett 35). This ground illustrates the superficiality of water bottles, where the image of the bottle is more important than the actual content. Barnett uses the analyst to convince her audience of the business in water bottles; not a necessity anymore, but a
After the purchase of the fountain, a newspaper article actually revealed that the fountain was a present for the town of Madison in the year of 1884. “Around the same time that the fountain appeared in Madison, four duplicate fountains had been created by JKI Co. and shipped to various parts of the United States and overseas” (Wright). Not only was the fountain appreciated by Madison, but it appears that it was also appreciated in other places as well. It is not surprising considering the fountain’s unique structure that other places would want something just as similar.
This is because only a small part of the population, particularly in developing countries, have access to water of acceptable quality. It is estimated that in some countries only 20% of the rural population has water of satisfactory quality. Based on these statistics, it is clear the urgent need for awareness about caring for water use. Almost without realizing it, we are seriously jeopardizing this essential resource, not for us but for our children's children and their generations, aware that in other parts o...

I chose to do my research about an ongoing issue with drinkable water. To narrow it down, I decided to concentrate on bottled water. This topic interests me personally, and I believe might be interesting for my classmates, as the issue affects everyone. Maybe if we realized the problems it causes, we would try drinking from a glass at home or carrying water in a refillable steel container instead of plastic. I hope that my research will change the perspective of the reader about such a convenient thing – bottled water.

Water is one of the most essential non-renewable natural resources on the Earth. Technically, an un-hydrated human being can live no more than three days. In the United States, people consume water mainly from tap water and bottle water. However, the consumption between these two sources is not even but lean to one side heavily. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, people consume from 240 to over 10000 times more per gallon for bottled water than they usually do for tap water. (NRDC) In addition, according to a survey from US National Library of Medicines, only 17% of the participants prefer to drink tap water exclusively.(US National Library) Compared to the bottled water which is shining like a superstar, tap water is like a diligent worker in the shade, unpopular but useful. The extremely unbalance of bottled water consumption implies that a commonly hold conception exists: bottle water is superior to tap water. In fact, scientific evidence proves that tap water is nothing different than bottle water. More importantly, the excessive consumption of bottled water is an irrational use of resources and creates severe environmental issues.
People have been using hydropower for centuries. Farmers have used water wheels to grind wheat into flour. They were usually placed by some source of water like a river. Then the water wheel picks up water that is flowing by buckets that are around the wheel.
The history of water purification started off in ancient Greek in the 2000B.C. people at the time used to boil water in order to purify it. There were also filtration and straining methods which helped to reduce visible particles and turbidity in water. However, due to the lack of knowledge in the chemical area, almost no process was taken to remove the harmful chemical contaminants. In fact, the purpose of water purification at that time was purely to make it smell and taste better. They believed if the water taste good to the mouth, it must be safe, clean and healthy. Therefore the Gr...
