The dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan can be justified. Apart from the desire to bring the war in the Pacific to an end and in the process saving allied soldiers lives, a deeper more sinister reason lay behind the decision to bomb innocent civilian populations in Japan using the latest Atomic technology. The threat of communism spreading deep into Asia through a Russian invasion directly threatened American ideals and its democratic way. In 1945 America dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, South of Hiroshima. The cities that were targeted were highly populated and were not considered strategic in the course of war. Japan was already negotiating surrender with the USSR. It was a quick fix solution in saving lives and bringing about peace. It was also the first time American had created a bomb and they wanted to test it rather than letting it go to waste. For America it was more about stopping Russia from taking over Japan than defeating Japan. And Finally Japan had many chances to surrender however it wasn’t until the American bombed them that they did. In February 1945 Stalin said that he would join the war in the Pacific once Germany had been defeated in Europe. President Truman was supportive of the Soviets to declare war on Japan. In July 1945 Truman and his advisors travelled to Potsdam, Germany to attend a conference and discuss the prospects for ending the war, worldwide.
