Think of a time back on before yonder, when the slave ships were sailing in the ports of Charleston and Savannah. What they thought they we bringing through were slaves, but what they didn’t know was they were bringing through a rich culture that would flourish for quite some time. Throughout ages people have always stated that Gullah was just a language, when Gullah is indeed a way of life. The Gullah Heritage is revealed through their history, their culture and their language.
Gullah itself goes way back to slavery times when African Americans were being captured and brought to America to be sold into slavery. Rice planters in the south needed the labor on their rice plantations and they thought “Slaves were far more profitable than any other form of labor” (Sumpter 1). They also chose blacks because they were resistant to tropical fevers where Europeans weren’t. It was said by Jenkins that “During the beginning of the Civil War plantation owners abandoned their plantations along with their slaves” (Jenkins 306) leaving them with the Northern military occupation. The first African slaves were brought to the colony of Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. They were brought over so that they could aid the production of crops. Caucasians believed they were superior then the Africans thus making them slaves. Many believed they could profit from having slaves. Example: instead of paying someone to work the filed or do any hard labor whites used Africans as slaves. The Africans would work for free and the slave owners would save money. Realistically speaking the treatments of slaves varied from a mild mistreatment to a sadist horrific torture.
I want to start with the history of slavery in America. For most African Americans, the journey America began with African ancestors that were kidnapped and forced into slavery. In America, this event was first recorded in 1619. The first documented African slaves that were brought to America were through Jamestown, Virginia. This is historically considered as the Colonial America. In Colonial America, African slaves were held as indentured servants. At this time, the African slaves were released from slavery after a certain number of years of being held in captivity. This period lasted until 1776, when history records the beginning of the Middle Passage. The Middle Passage showed the increased of African slaves were bought into America. However, there has been a "language" use among African American students; "language" that has not been examined closely nor acknowledged until recently. Ebonics is classified as "Black English" or "Black sounds", or "Pan African Communication Behavior" or "African Language systems" which originates from the West African languages such as Ibo, Yoruba, and Hausa (Amended Resolution of the Board of Education, 1997. P. 1)." During the times of slavery, ebonics was also spoken as Gullah, which is a combination of West African languages, and English. Ebonics is a term coined by psychologist Robert Williams, resulting from the combination of two words, "ebony" and "phonics" in order to describe its dialect (The Daily O'Collegian Editorial Board. 1997. P. 1). The controversy behind ebonics is whether or not it is actually a language or and should it be instructed as a foreign language.
Quarles informative historical writing gives the reader a deeper understanding of African contributions to the U.S. and presents his argument in an objective manner. By and large, this novel was without a doubt a subject deserving of study. Quarles novel deeply relates to my selected topic of slavery impact among southern U.S states because he briefly emphasizes the contributions in which African slave’s affected southern U.S. soil, such as rice plantations in South Carolina. The Constitution guaranteed it as a freedom to them, and white slaves were virtually nonexistent. Slavery was so deeply engrained as a “black race” attribute, that it came to be used as a descriptor to further lower the status of African Americans. Free of these racial tensions, whites seemed to enjoy freedom without conflict. However, in reality, not all whites had access to equal freedom. “Freedom” often meant the ability to have equal opportunity, as the purpose of immigration to the colonies was often based on a desire for economic independence. Equal opportunity was not the case in a hierarchical, socioeconomically-divided America. Land ownership or religious affiliation were often required to vote or run for office respectively. In many ways, slaves were actually subject to less forced social structure on large Southern plantations, where they could develop their own private communities. The Gullah language is an example of a creole of English and West African dialects. Religious syncretism often resulted in African-influenced versions of Christianity, far more culturally-mixed than what Puritanical Massachusetts mandated its citizens adhere to. The Gullah is a community that lives in the coastal parts of South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia where they fish and farm. The ancestors of the Gullah trace back to Charleston, South Carolina, where there was a port for the Atlantic Slave trade, which was the most commonly used port in North America. Gullah is “more than simply the language and name of a people. It encompasses the essence of struggle, spirituality, perseverance and tradition” (South Carolina Business and Industry). Their relatives are West Africans who suffered many hardships and are honored and remembered by a rare preservation of African culture that the Gullah keeps alive. The Gullah truly live by the meaningful words that “If you don’t know where you’re going, you should know where you came from” (U.S. Department of State). They use African names, carry on African folktales, and create African craftwork. The Gullah have been able to maintain their African heritage because they are secluded from other influences because of the isolation of the Sea Islands.
However, it seems as though the impossible is possible, or at least mostly possible, and traditional Rastafarianism enforces rules and cultural norms that keep womyn in the subordinate, domesticated realm of everyday life. Yet, in the last thirty years or so, those rules and norms have been slowly challenged by a new generation of Rastafarian womyn who no longer accept their inferior position and are demanding greater equality. These womyn, some of whom turn to reggae to promote their own socially conscious ideas, symbolize the growing consciousness of womyn in Jamaica and other majority world countries who have experienced centuries of oppression.
The slaves in low country grew through the constant new arrivals of slaves from Africa. Slaves in the low country had a very high mortality rate due to disease, overwork, and poor treatment. Slaves in the low country retained more of their African heritage because there were so many of them and always fresh Africans coming in the ports. By the 18th Century, the low country had almost a 70 percent ratio of black slaves compared to white slave owners. Charleston was North America’s leading port of entry for Africans. The main crops in the low country were rice and corn compared to the Chesapeake region. The slaves there developed their own broken languages called Geechie and Gullah. Low Country showed a great deal of Creolization. This is the first sign of distinct classes between slaves. The creoles stayed in the same areas as whites because they were mixed race they had social and economic advantages over slaves that were on plantations but they were still watched all the time by whites. In contrast to the slaves in the Chesapeake region, the slaves in low country had certain independence in their daily routines. Once they were done with their chores, their time was free to do what they chose without supervision. Being Garifuna means having African descendants that are a group of rarely heard of people with their own unique twists to aspects that make up an ethnicity or race. I knew that just the terms “Black Hispanic,” or “Garifuna” did not fully encompass who I am and so for a while people saw me as the dark skinned girl who spoke fluent spanish. I knew I was much more than that. Towards the end of high school, I was introduced to the term “Afro- Latino(a).” For the first time in my life, I found a word to fully categorize myself without feeling like I was leaving a part of my identity out. For the first time, I felt like I had a complete understanding of who I was and I wanted to share it with others and educate people that you can truly come from any ethnicity or race despite your skin color. Skin color is just a characteristic but the language, the dances, food, traditions, cultures etc. is truly what connects you to your ancestors. There is a way for you to identify all of these things in one if you really want to come to par with who you are. I no longer had to explain to people why I was dark but spoke Spanish. I no longer had to hear things like “ I didn’t think dark skins could speak Spanish,” or “Oh my God you speak Spanish, but wait... you’re dark, I thought you were Black,” or “ Your last name is Cacho? Slaves could not create strong and meaningful relations—degrading them as human beings. Religion was something questioned by the slave holders because the stigma of religion bolstering a craving for freedom loomed over the owners heads. Lastly, the painfully slow death of slavery in the northern region truly dealt with the “high mortality, low fertility, the close of the transatlantic slave trade, and the southward exportation of slaves for profit”, rather than a humane mentality. Ira Berlin’s thesis is extremely valid due to the eventual differentiation amongst the varying regions within the growing America. Prior to the plantation regime, racism did not truly exist, nor did race have a major part within society. A lot of people’s understanding of Rasta’s only goes as far as to think that Rasta’s are people that live in Jamaica, smoke weed, and have Dreadlocks. These people do not begin to think what is behind the movement. The idea that Rastafari is strictly Jamaican is also very wrong. Since the origination of Rastafari, the Rasta movement has expanded far beyond the island of Jamaica. Rasta’s now live all over the world. There are Rasta cultures in all parts of Europe, Asia, New Zealand, United States, and especially Africa. This paper seeks to explain Rastafari and to show it’s expansion by exposing Rasta’s culture from it’s most holy form in Ethiopia to one of it’s least holy in Dallas Texas.
During the revolutionary war against Britain, while Americans were trying to fight for their freedom African slaves were trying to for themselves too. Some of the first efforts to try and end slavery was during this war. There were slave owners contradicting themselves of owning African slaves while fighting for their own freedom so they freed their slaves. African slaves really wanted their freedom so they would do anything to achieve it. Slave owners were afraid to leave to war and to leave the slave with their families because they could try and kill them. They didn’t want to give them guns either because they though they would just use them against them. Leaders like Alexander Hamilton created a battalions of negroes that would fight with them in exchange of their freedom after the war. Britain also was saying the same thing to them also, Lord Dunmore the British governor wrote a proclamation saying that any slaves that ran away and fought for the British army would have their freedom after the war was over. Around 4,000 runaway slaves signed their named, even though they lost the war thy still were granted their freedom and were sent to Jamaica and Nova
