It is obvious that Jane Austen illustrates different characters according to their class by the way they interact with other characters. Pride and Prejudice illustrates the wealth of certain classes and the battle for power of others. The conversations characters take part in emphasizes their motifs and their true nature. The characters within the gentry class take part in more constructive conversations since they are satisfied with their class allocation, whereas characters amongst the professional class tend to act pretentious since they are not fully satisfied with their class allocation. The way the characters talk and the issues they talk about indicates how beneficial advancement of their status in society is to them. The characters like Miss. Bingley and Mr. Collins who are in the professional class would like to move up to the gentry class . This is evident through the dialogues they engage themselves in or the actions they commit. To both these characters connections and advancement of status is vital. Miss. Bingley is a proud woman who thinks much of herself and criticizes others with harshness. For instance when Elizabeth visits Jane at Netherfield while she is ill, Miss Bingley criticizes Elizabeth as having "no conversation, no style, no taste, no beauty." (7.34) Potentially seeing no reason further their friendship, this shows that Miss. Bingley is not a well educated person nor is she a good judge of character. When she declares this statement Mr. Darcy is in the room and at that point she senses an attraction between them but being a selfish person as she is unable to consider the positive aspects of Elizabeth. As seen in this novel, characters in the gentry class are illustrated as noble and well-bred people through their interactions with other characters and whom in this case are happy will their stance in society. Achieving power, gaining respect from others and feeling proud of oneself are all elements as to why characters in the professional class want to advance their position in society. Though not all the characters emphasized their interest in their own property and desire for wealth, in that day and age the poor did not live a decent life and non of the characters wanted to descend in the class system. Conversations between characters further illustrated the importance of class and how in society many of the male characters were associated with the property they owned or the fortune the characters gained from their family. Proud and arrogant, Mr. Darcy stands at the head of the room giving a cold, dark stare. He gives the impression at the first ball to the people of Meryton that he is prideful, looks down upon their society, and that he possesses poor manners. Mr. Darcy, new to town, is perceived by the Bennets in a demeaning light. After the ball Elizabeth’s mother says, “…Lizzy does not lose much by not suiting his fancy; for he is a most disagreeable, horrid man, not at all worth pleasing. So high and so conceited that there was no enduring him! He walked here, and he walked there, fancying himself so very great! […] I quite detest the man." (Austen. 9.). The opinions Elizabeth holds of Mr. Darcy are completely formed from the opinions of others. She also does this because at the first ball she hears Darcy exclaim to his friend, “She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me,” (Austen. 7). From then on, she continually attacks him with snide, biting remarks. Because Mr. Darcy refuses to dance with Elizabeth at the first ball in Meryton, she becomes determined “never to dance with him,” (Austen. 13). This universal principle, relevant throughout time, is portrayed through the characterization of Darcy in ‘Pride’. The difference in class, landed gentry compared to middle class, remained a vital factor in Darcy’s behaviour and way of living. The use of verbal irony when Wickham comments, “He (Darcy) was to be above all company, in having been unworthy to be compared” and Mrs. Lucas implying that “With family, fortune, everything he has the right to be proud”, demonstrates the separation created through the class barriers. Austen challenges these social class barriers through satirically implementing the unorthodox unions of Darcy and Elizabeth in her novel, in defiance of the ironic social dichotomy (CHANGE) “Your alliance will be a disgrace, YOU(R) name will never be mentioned by any of us”. The characterization of Darcy also emphasises the importance (Over the top/ruling) of stratification, being at utmost importance and over ruling other positive assets in life such as love, relationships, freedom and being ‘happy’ – “Could you expect me to rejoice in the inferiority of your connections… whose condition in life is so decidedly beneath my own?” showing the importance aspect of Regency England and its relevance to the modern world.
When Elizabeth arrives, Mr.Bingley’s sister starts to look at her low because of how she showed up to their house with mud and dirt all over her dress. She is probably the most different out of all of them because she isn’t a person that is very sociable with anyone. In the book she isn’t mentioned much because she is just a minor character but when mentioned she is always doing something to keep her from socializing. “I admire the activity of your benevolence,” observed Mary, “but every impulse of feeling should be guided by reason; and, in my opinion, exertion should always be in proportion to what is required(Austen).
Austen’s novel focuses on the social class known as the rural landowning gentry, and the people whose education or family connections enable them to associate with the gentry. Austen uses Marianne Dashwood to represent the "sensible and clever; but eager in everything; her sorrows, her joys, could have no moderation, she was everything but prudent" counterpart to her sister Elinor Dashwood who had "strength of understanding and coolness of judgment," neither of whom belong to the land gentry any longer. The reader is first acquainted with Mr. Darcy's arrogance at the Meryton Ball. Speaking of Elizabeth Bennet, he so snobbishly says that she was, " tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me" (Austen 9). His feelings of superiority to the people of the town lend Mr. Darcy to be judged as a man with a repulsive and cruel personality. The women, who had found him dashingly attractive at first glance, deemed him a man unworthy of marriage because he offered no positive qualities other than wealth. Not only did Darcy refuse to dance with Elizabeth, but he makes it clear that no woman in the room was worthy or met his standards of a suitable partner stating that, " there is not another woman in this room, whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with" (Austen 8). In the beginning of the novel, Mr. Darcy is only concerned with the wealth and social standing of the people in the town. Because of their lesser social rank, he feels they are un-deserving of his presence and refuses to communicate with them. Unlike many girls of her time Austen received a fairly comprehensive education. She received this mainly through the undivided support of her family. Author Jane Austen had porttryal of arrogance that existed in upper class society. She uses Emma as a representative of the faults and lack of values of her society. Just as Emma contains these many faults, the upper class society as a whole also contains these many faults. Additionally, in Emma, Austen depicts the distorted views of gentility. Austen depicts her own message of true gentility by creating characters of differing class ranks. Bradbury relates that the characters that are socially high seem to be morally inferior and those of lower rank are "elevated" by their actions (Austen 81). Austen's development of characters, especially Emma, is very effective in relaying her message about the snobbery and lack of gentility that existed in upper class society.

Most of Austen’s novels use the lens of romance in order to provide social commentary through both realism and irony. In her final novel, Persuasion, Austen explores the emerging idea of a meritocracy through her portrayal of the male protagonist, Captain Wentworth. The evolution from a traditional aristocracy-based society in Emma to that of a contemporary meritocracy-based society in Persuasion embodies Austen’s own development and illustrates her subversion of almost all the social attitudes and institutions that were central to her initial novels.

Jane Austen is very clear in her writing about class distinction and she uses the novel to look beyond the widely stratified community divided by social classes experienced in the 18th century in England. This distinction shows that class snootiness is simply but an illusion rather than a real obstruction to marriage, given that Elizabeth, though socially inferior to Darcy, she is not in any way academically inferior to him. In this sense, Darcy realizes that his class pretentiousness is mislaid toward Elizabeth, since she also finds out that her prejudice towards Darcy’s snobbish and superior manner is misplaced when he rescues Elizabeth’s family from a scandal and disgrace. In this context, the writer uses Darcy and Elizabeth to show that class distinction does not guarantee one’s happiness in life, neither does it allow him or her to own every good thing desired. Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”, Scott FitzGerald’s “The Great Gatsby”, Leo Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina”, and Charles Dickens’s “Great Expectations” for instance are just some of the many novels centralizing social class.
The novel begins with the legendary declaration, “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Austen proceeds to demonstrate the complete opposite; a single woman must be in want of a young man in possession of a good fortune. She then admirably goes on to describe the social interactions of love and marriage of the upper class. Throughout the novel and during Jane Austen’s generation there were many strict social protocols and women were deemed inferior to men. The rules of conduct begin as Mr. Collins is to inherit Longbourn and the Bennet women are not able to visit him without a male introduction and Mrs. Bennet is adamant on her daughters meeting Mr. Collins, to move up socially. Mr. Bennet provokes Mrs. Bennet by suggesting, “You and the girls may go… or you may send them by themselves to visit the affluent Mr. Bingley”, knowing ...
