For centuries, war has been a method to gain advantage. The powerful benefits of war is a possibility to gain freedom, power, glory, and territory. Going to war causes negative outcomes such as damage to property and life, but for freedom and liberty, it is necessary. War should be the last resort countries should have to go through in order to protect themselves. War is necessary for freedom and liberty for our country, but not necessary for gaining resources and land. The American Revolutionary War that took place from 1765 through 1783 is the war where America gained independence from Great Britain. The tension between Great Britain and America was arising because of the series of laws attempted by Great Britain to gain more control of the American Colonies. The colonies decided to revolt and were unprepared for the war, while Great Britain had a better trained army and navy. Britain did not gain much from the battles because of transporting its army across the Atlantic Ocean. On July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed and America gained its freedom. According to The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, author Pauline Maier states, “The Declaration of Independence asserted the right of the people to “alter or to abolish” a government that failed to secure their rights and to adopt another in a form they thought most likely “to effect their safety and happiness.” For that purpose, the Americans rejected not only British rule but also monarchy” (Maier). The only way America was going to gain it’s independence from Britain was at the cost of going to war. Being able to abolish the government that failed to give rights to Americans is how we gained our freedom. The advantage of the American Revolutionar... ... middle of paper ... ...ly a low estimate. People need to know the cost in human lives of the decision to go to war” (Furney). When an estimate of half of a million civilians are dead over something minor and unimportant, it shows you how countries are willing to kill for just about anything. The war that is not fought for freedom and liberty is an unnecessary one. In certain conditions, war is unavoidable. Resorting to war for freedom and liberty is the only reason why a country should ever go to war. Certain wars such as The Civil War and The American Revolutionary War has shaped the way America is. In this country, freedom gives us a choice. An inevitable part of war is the millions of casualties that have died. When these casualties have lost their life for a reason to gain resources and land, that war is unnecessary. “War is a sin, but sometimes, a necessary one” (Edward Hardwicke).
