According to the official Walt Disney Company website D23.com, the Walt Disney Company was founded on October 16, 1923 in California by Walt Disney and his brother Roy O. Disney. The company was originally started as an animation studio and named The Disney Brothers Company.
The studio’s first work became Walt Disney’s Alice Comedies a cartoon/live-action series about “a little girl in a cartoon world” made with M.J. Winkler (a silent animation producer). In 1926 the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio’s name was changed to become “The Walt Disney Studio” and was moved to a new location on Hyperion Avenue in the Silver Lake District. During this decade, Disney also began to create full length animated feature films and the first of the films was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs which premiered in 1937. Snow White was very successful and became the highest grossing film of its time before being beaten by Gone With the Wind. More projects were scheduled, but as World War II began, the company began to lose customers which made it hard to create expensive films. Walt Disney, who wished to branch out into industries besides television and who frequently took his children to zoos and amusement parks wanted to create an amusement park of his own. Disneyland was opened on July 17, 1955 in Anaheim, California. At present day there are such parks worldwide with new attractions being regularly added in. the 1960s saw the creation of television shows such as The Shaggy Dog, and movies such as Mary Poppins. However, during this time period Walt Disney passed away on December 15, 1966.
Despite Walt Disney’s passing, the company continued to produce animated movies using the plans Disney left behind. Some work created after Walt Disney’s death included The Jungle Book (1967) and The Aristocats (1970). In 1969 the company expanded its business with an educational subsidiary called Walt Disney Educational Materials Co. as well as the Florida Walt Disney World, which was a planned venture by Walt Disney himself and the land for which was purchased in Orlando before Walt’s death.
