Children growing up in America are always told they can achieve any goal they set, as long as they put their minds to it. Walt Disney is one American who showed the ability to put his mind to a goal and find a way to make it happen. Coming up from working as a newspaper cartoonist in Kansas City to becoming a household name, he created an entertainment empire in Hollywood and built the largest theme park/resort in the world. Walt Disney is one of the greatest success stories in American history.
Disney’s artistic chops started at an early age. In the small farm town of Marceline, Missouri, where his family lived several years during his childhood, Walt sold his first work of art. He drew a sketch of a town doctor’s horse and was elated

Walt would eventually change the name to Walt Disney Studios. Despite some early adversity, including some of his animators leaving his company for Universal Pictures and losing the trademark to one of his signature characters, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Disney would create many cartoons that are still popular today (“Walt Disney”). The origin of Disney’s extremely fast-rising star came in 1928 with his creation of Mickey Mouse. Also in the late-1920’s, Disney created some other popular characters, such as Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto. Walt began focusing on full-length motion pictures in the 1930’s and 1940’s and brought us films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Bambi. They were even among the first to broadcast programming using television (“Walt Disney”). Among their TV lineup were Zorro, Davy Crockett, and The Mickey Mouse …show more content…
He had switched his attention to a new venture. Walt had taken his children to a small farm-themed amusement park and began to feel very nostalgic because memories arose of the farm he had lived on as a child in Missouri. Walt thought to himself that he would love to have a theme park of his own. His initial thought was to build one close to his studio in Burbank, however, there was not enough space. He ended up choosing Anaheim, a mere 35 miles south of Los Angeles, as the site for Disneyland. Walt oversaw the construction and innovation of the entire park. The park was a place where families could come and explore, ride rides, and even meet the Disney characters. Disneyland, by all accounts, was Walt’s baby, however, one major flaw began staring him in the eye. The park stretched out to the edges of the land that Walt Disney had purchased. Eventually, many restaurants, service stations, and hotels popped up near the park to cash in on the crowds that flocked in. From inside the park, patrons could see billboards and fast-food joints. With no buffer zone between the park and the outside world, Walt Disney’s image of an escape for the family from ordinary life could not be completely met. Walt wanted to build another park and didn’t want to make the same mistake
Walt Disney was on a train ride to Hollywood after the loss of his character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit when he decided to start from scratch. He bounced ideas off of his wife as to what would make a cute character. Walt started doodling and eventually settled on a mouse. He wanted to name the mouse Mortimer but his wife laughed and said Mickey was a nicer name, and thus a star was born. (Miller)
Hundreds of people came to see it. After Walt’s first big hit he soon was publicly ... ... middle of paper ... ... idea of hotels with amusement parks. Walt changed the way entertainment would be viewed (A.).

In 1927 Walt created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Disney did the things no one else would do. He took the old stories from Europe, created his own versions that he thought were better, and created some of his films from them. The building of Disneyland was a literal dream come true for Disney. He had financial backing from ABC because of the Mickey Mouse Club. Disney was able to create a fantasy world for both children and adults. Disneyland allowed people to immerse themselves in the world of their favorite cartoons and Disney movies instead of just viewing them on the big screen. Disney based his Disneyland’s “Main Street USA” from the streets of small-town America, most buildings from downtown Marceline, Missouri. He did research for his park design there in 1946. Before his death, on December 15th, 1966, from lung cancer, Disney visited Marceline, Missouri several more times and never forgot the small town that influenced so much of his astonishing works. Disney’s theme parks created a whole new outlook for creativity and new building technology like audio-animatronics, which eventually brought his mechanical characters to life. Ever since Mickey Mouse was created in 1928, Disney has been at the forefront of the cartoon world. Every youngster has a favorite Disney character or movie. Over the years they have created some of the best movies of all time. However, Walt Disney hasn’t always been successful. He survived bankruptcy in 1922 and had to rethink how he was going to approach his life. I think it is safe to say the approach he took was the right one. One of his first productions was an animated short film Alice’s Wonderland, which turned into what we know as Alice in Wonderland. Mr. Disney’s first attempt at a feature-length animated film debuted in 1937 after three years of production. His masterpiece of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is one of his most awarded movies. Following World War II Disney Production was in a substantial amount of debt. They needed to come out with a new movie that would win over the public of America. They came out with just the right movie, Cinderella, in 1950. This was their biggest hit since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs some 15 years ago. Because of Cinderella Disney Productions stayed in business and could go on to produce many more heartwarming movies.
As Walt grew, so did his Imagination. The more famous he got the more ideas and dreams he could make a reality. Working out of his Uncles cramped garage, in the sweltering California heat was over. Walt had begun a new chapter in his life. Now receiving countless Oscar Nominations, and being eulogized for his many movies and cartoons. Where up to this point in his life he had many role models and people he looked up to, now he was a role model to many people. Walt Disney impacted the lives of many aspiring filmmakers, and changed the movie industry.

The team decided to use it as a “pilot” film to sell a series of these “Alice Comedies.” On October 16, 1923, a distributor in New York, M. J. Winker, contacted Walt to distribute the “Alice Comedies.” After that day, the Disney Company became the start of something magical and very successful. Originally known as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio because Walt and Roy were equal partners, the company name then changed to Walt Disney Studio, with the request of Roy. Disneyland has inspired hundreds of books, articles in academic journals, and college classes dissecting its magic and evaluating its impact. Since Disneyland’s opening there has been evidence to suggest that the Disney Company is owed credit for creating not only the first, but the most successful theme park in history. Walt Disney created a niche in what was a dying industry leading to Disneyland’s success that is still observed today as the most popular and most recognizable park in the park entertainment industry. Although Disneyland was not the first amusement park, Walt Disney did perfect the idea of an amusement park and give birth to the first ever theme park which blossomed into the theme park industry. The influence Disneyland commands as the first theme park has impacted American pop culture, society, economics, marketing, entertainment and tourism by creating what has been called the “Disney effect” by author Margaret King, Director of the Center for Cultural Studies & Analysis. The impact the “Disney effect” has had on America has been argued between historians, economist, and
